Here's my new DIY pico, along with some of the construction details. I decided I needed a desk lamp, and I though what could be cooler than a pico tank for illumination. It is a 2.8g DIY glass tank that I made myself, along with a home made canopy and stand. For filtration I’m using live rock and an Aquaclear trickle filter rated for 30-50g which provides a descent amount of flow. I will run carbon and possibly a nitrate absorber. I will also perform frequent water changes with water from my 90 gal once every two or three days. I think it should be a pretty healthy little environment. For lighting I am using a Coralife 10 watt PC self ballasting fixture that fits any medium sized socket. I may upgrade to a 20 watt fixture in the near future though. For stocking I will just put some crabs and maybe a snail or two in at first. I will probably add some button polyps and possibly a tree leather after the filter matures. Possibly a damsel to really make things interesting. I am also toying with the idea of hooking the tank up to my main display (which is about 8 feet away) with some small vinyl tubes and a maxijet or something. I know this is cheating in the pico cube world, but then I’d never have to worry about the tank. I guess that’s all the details, on with the pics!

For the most part I neglected to take pictures of the construction, but I did manage to take a picture of this stage as I set up the glass to be siliconed together

Here’s a peek under the hood at the light. I used a mirror as the top of the canopy which should be a pretty effective reflector. I used reflective aluminum tape to tape up the exposed wood of the canopy. The same stuff you would use to seal up heat and ventilation ducts.
and here are my only tenants at the moment. Hank and Herman
This is my first pico tank, but it has been a fun little project so far, and relatively cheap.
