these are my elegances that we have in the uk, i believe them to be picteti's rather than jardini, can you guy's enlighten us to the differences to the two spiecies?

i've had these for a while now, researching them these seem to have shorter tentacles than the jardini?

What I'm about to write is my opinion based on my experience and knowledge of this animal.
There is but one family of Elegance coral. That is Catalaphyllia Jardinei Named after Dr. Rene Catala. I have read about this relatively new family or subfamily. This is false. The only differences between individuals are due to age, health, and environment. (other than color patterns) Characteristics can differ greatly from one individual to another, but they are all still the same animal.
With that said, you have some very nice corals there. As they grow and continue to acclimate to your aquarium the size and shape of their tentacles will change allong with their color. Good luck and post some updated pics in a few months. Again, nice corals!

hi mate, run a search on euphillia picteti, you'll find a lot mre info, there's even some stores that sell the two types? the ones i have, have very sticky tentacles but do not poses a sting? they can touch neibouring corals with no i'll effects? yet if a turbo snail goes by the tentacles will stick to it draw it in and somehow extracts it from the shell, i've now lost 4 turbos to my elegances!

I did the serch. I don't agree with what they are comming up with. These are two of my corals. Both of them have short tentacles, not because they are from a different family but because they are, or have been sick. As they recover the tentacles get longer. The short tentacled corals dont have the real powerfull sting because they are ill. This will change as they recover.

Hello again mate, I just took a closer look at your corals. Are they all frags from the same coral? They look an awful lot alike.
I did alittle more searching and what I found was disgusting. There are online stores that are selling very sick corals under this picteti name, and just saying that it is a different species. This is criminal if you ask me. They should be locked up.

hi mate, no they are not frags, tmc brought hundeds into the country, i saw them all in tmc's tanks it was just a mass of elegances all crammed next to each other it was an amazing site! but nearly all the ones in the uk are the same, the purple tip one seem to have longer slimmer tentacles but the pink and white tip one all have shorter tentacles, i dont think tmc would have had 3 shipments of sick corals? to me a true cat will almost appear like a malu anemone, i've not seen one from tmc yet that resembles a 'true' cat, although i have seen some in folks tanks turn, one week they all look perfectly healthy then the next they were all swollen and spewing white gunk from there mouths, these animals were fine for months then turned over night! there were 7 in an 8ft tank, mine came from tmc on the same day from the same tank and still appear fine, i'm wondering if missing minor elements could be a factor to them turning? as pulse colonys can just crash, i think that is caused by a defiancy of some sort, maybe these cats are using some sort of element that cant be tested for and is hard to replace?

The reason I asked is because I have one (pic below) that looks like yours but mine is a frag.
There are many theories out there as to whats going on with these corals. I posted mine after 14 months of research into the problem here in this forum under the title Elegance Coral Theory if you are interested in checking it out. It is on the second page I believe.

I traded in 3 of my elegance corals as i was not happy with them, but i managed to come across this wild caught jardinei, and would not part with him, iv found they seem to do better if you dont feed them direct, let them catch whats in the water, after all thats why they have sticky tentacles. Put a picteti in the same tank as a jardinei and the picteti will close down straight away.
Here is my red jardinei

very nice grand wizard:)
re elegancecoral; these are deffo not frags they are fairly young animals they have the point of attacment from where they formed the the shell spreads out in a Y shape, looking at the skeleton head on it has a figure eight apperance.

I wasn't saying that yours was a frag just because mine is. I was just asking the question. I have both frags and young corals.

i understand that mate, no need to get waspy now:eek1:
just sying thse are not frags, one of mine does look very much like yours, if these animals decide to go pear shaped i'll let ya know, keep up your good work mate:thumbsup:

I didn't mean to sound "waspy". I do apologies if I came across that way.
If I could show you pics of a coral change from what looks like a Picteti into a jardinei, would this convince you that there is only one species, or would there be some other explanation for this?

This is a pic of 7 (if you count the little guy in the top right hand corner) out of my 9 Elegance corals. From what I understand they would be considered Picteti because they have short tentacles and very little sting. I will post pics once a month as they improve.

I will also be moving things around to give them more room. What you think, mate?
