My experience with harlequin shrimp

Then there is some like chromis who are known to even just vanish in an established tank. Let alone a LFS. Those buggers are literally $1 wholesale

Ikr, for me, can't add a third one without the other two killing it off...

Guess it's a law or something that everything has to be unavoidable :/

Probably just an inch and a quarter or so. While seeing what gender they are I was pretty impressed at how strong they were outside of the water. Most shrimp will lay there like a lump or try and flick away but these guys were able to move out of water pretty well. Little shrimp tanks

Trying to get a pair of these. The LFS has 4 of them, but they can't tell the sexes.
How did you do it?

You can tell their sex by looking under their abdomen. Their pleopods (Swimming things) will either be clear (male) or they will have large spots (female)

You can, just make sure the compatability with your other livestock is perfectly fine.

Avoiding stuff like most wrasses, coral banded shrimp, arrow crabs, sally light foot crabs, large hermits, and big predatory fish is what I'm refering to.. as well as other generally aggressive cohabitants.

I've witnessed mine "fight" with an emerald crab, where the shrimp went after and literally chased down the crab, pushing it in another cave. It was very shocking and surprising how aggressive the frail looking shrimp got, after seeing that my confidence for them holding their own is boosted significantly.

Other than compatability, just be sure to have a back up plan when you run out of stars, whether it's rehoming the shrimp or feeding it afterward.

Hi Calappidea,
I've been reading this thread with great intrest, I note that Shrimp pairs are rare to get hold of and that even the most accompished breeder cannot raise juv's to adult shrimp. This means to the public that only wild pairs can be attained :blown:. As these Shrimp only occur one pair per coral outcrop per perfect conditions do you not think captivity is raping and pillaging a rare animal for its natural surroundings just for decoration ?

Bluedog

When you put them in your tank how often will you see them? I bought one about a month ago, haven't seen it since the 2nd day. I have a 180g with lots of rock, coral, and to many astrenia stars. I'm worried maybe he has died. Not to much online about this. Everything I find is about feeding them
