My female breeder is injured!

Not really sure where to post this and will probably post it in my than one thread.

My female has a nasty cut on her back. I know it's a cut because I took her out last night and held her in my hand and inspected it thinking it maybe a parasite but it's a cut. She probably got if from the spawning slate because it has sharp corners and she is protective of the eggs. Most likely did it chasing another fish away that got to close.

My worries are infections and just wondered if it will heal on it's own or should I be doing something? Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

The same thing happened to my female breeder a couple years ago.Almost the same spot on the head but deeper.I did nothing she healed and has a nice scar to prove it.She is still spawning today.

I had a purple tang cut mine very deep on the top of the head and I left it and she healed on her own. There isn't even a scar.

Thanks so much for that post, I'm hoping that will be the case. I do have some AP EM Erythromycin powder packet and will drop her in a 10gal. hospital if need be. I would hate do have to do that since she's guarding a clutch of eggs right now, but the male watches them more closely than she does. The good news is she's still eating like the pig she's always been.

The only tang I have is a yellow eyed kole. I'm not sure if the kole's have the tail barb if so it's hard to see but I know she does not like him at all when he comes around.

I would leave her and don't stress her out. Maybe take the slatr away and let her be. I wouldn't worry until she shows sign that she US sick.

If you have a solid breeding pair I would move her unless you are going to move her and the male because it may lead the male to think the female left. When you add her back then you may very well have a problem...

I would say leave her anyway. Should heal right up. Just watch for any signs of infection and react accordingly.

It could be the Kole. Every tang has a tail barb on it. its actually a modified spine. I agree with everyone else though leave it in there until it shows signs of becoming bad

Thank you all for your post and advice! Yes there are a very strong breeding pair and I have a thread in the Fish Breeding forum call Spawn 5 that shows how strong they are.

I will just keep a close eye on her for now and will act accordingly.

Thanks again, what a wonderful site this truly is for help and advice.

Ooops just caught an error that I didn't see before. "Would" in the first sentence should be "wouldn't". My bad, I think you figured that out though.

Keep a very close eye on her. I lost a large saddle female the other day. She was 5" and thick. So was skittish and tried to jump many times and the last time she injured herself really bad. She jacked up her face and jaw. She died 3 days later and I couldn't do anything to help her. She wouldn't eat and was breathing heavy for 2 days.
If it was my clown I would take her out and treat her. Never know what's in the tank and could get infected. The male won't forget her or start To turn female for a week or so. They might skip laying for a while, but that is better than a dead female. If you don't pull her watch her appetite and breathing. And keep an eye on the wound. And also if the other fish or male goes after her cause she is hurt.

It is probably the kole. I've got a spawning pair of occellaris and the female occasionally ends up with a similar wound when she's guarding eggs. She also sports a bristle worm bristle mustache from time to time. Keep an eye out for infection, but as long as your water quality is ok, she should be fine.

How long did it take yours to heal?

I am now convinced it was the Kole tang that did it. She hates that kole and I think it's only because of his grazing nature he pick at everthing and seem to have full run of the tank. So I think that picking worries her.

It took a few weeks to a month to fully heal.

Thanks Nate, Some have suggested that I pull her and treat her now. I but I would pull them both if I have to pull either. She's eating every thing in sight that I feed and I make sure that it is fully soaked in garlic. The wound is seem ok and the swelling is going done. I just hoping for the best. Here is a video of them spawning it truly is a beautiful pair and what kind of clown do you think they are?

Just click on pic to play.

Hard to tell I'd probably guess Black Ocellaris.I'd leave them.Moving them may stress them. You obviously have good water quality in the main tank it should heal on its own.

I think they are mocha. Blk O and regular Ocellaris. Very nice fish.

That is what another clown fish breeder told me a the INDY frag swap 3 weeks ago. Only he said they were a cross between the percula's blacks and regular ocellaris.

I have know clue but I do now believe they are Mocha's.
