My few Zoas in 47G SPS tank

OK, so I am an SPS guy. But I run a barebottom tank and so decided I need some Zoas to make the glass bottom look a little better.

I posted these pics in my SPS tank thread and member A. Grandis asked me to post photos here as well.

So here goes:

I really like these Zoas. I have no idea what kind they are. There are two main kinds, and if you look closely there are one of two rainbow sort of coloured ones. I paid £15 (about $22US) for this; which is cheap because there are over 100 polyps. The photo shows about half the Zoa rock.

I also have these ones. I was hoping these would be hot pink. But for a cheap price of £10 ($14US) I dont mind.

I bought these ones because of the orange skirt. The orange skirt glows crazy under the LED's. Bought for £10; 8 polyps, so not as cheap as the others.

Since I am new to keeping Zoas, advice on how to colour them best/feeding etc etc would be nice. :)

They are beautiful :)

The first two are Whammin Watermelon and Radioactive Dragon Eyes. They were likely cheaper because they are common and grow relatively fast. Personally, they are among my favorite zoas out there!

Thanks for letting me know the names. I really like them and dont care too much for rare/expensive polyps. As long as it looks good to me, then I am happy. The first two look nice in all lighting which is a bonus. :D

Hey sahin, thanks for posting here!! I appreciate that!

The reason I've asked was because of the ones you call "rainbow".
If you look close enough to the first picture the "rainbow" (top right) it looks like a color mix of the 2 distinct colonies.
I wonder if anyone else have noticed that happening in their own tanks.
I really don't think it's a 3rd species, but one of the "Whammin Watermelon" that turned out to try mimicking the "Radioactive Dragon Eyes".

I've seen that happening in nature, but not in any of my systems yet. It's not common, I would think.

Please post your thoughts/pics on the subject.

I see what you mean about that one morph zoa Grandis! If I knew how, and they were mine, I would sooo isolate that sucker and see if more might come of it. Pretty!

Well, the problem is that you can loose it really fast to an infection when you isolate a polyp. It's better to have it, than to take the risk.

It's just amazing how that happens!!!
There is no explanation, really!
I mean… the polyp clearly belongs to the colony surrounding it, but has color shades of the neighbor's colony!?!?
Beautiful stuff!
Notice the left side of the picture... Some mimicking almost going on there too…

How can that be? Only God can explain that!
No doubt that is the most interesting zoa picture I remember.

Thanks again sahin!!

I see what you mean! Yes, they seem to be a mixture of the two kinds. Pretty amazing. I wont attempt removing them, but will see if further polyps appear like this.

Oh wow, that is an awesome morph. I paid £15 on a zoa rock with 80 polyps of a mix of Radio Actives, Eagle Eyes and some palys and I thought that was a deal. Clearly £15 for even a single polyp of that awesome morph is worth it in my opinion.

EDIT: Ooo, I just Googled "Eagle Eye Morphs" and the top link was to RC. Someone on there says that he had a similar morph but after fragging it, it returned back to normal colouration.

Some of the whammin watermelons just look like eagle eyes with nicer colors and some have the neon green center ive had mine for about 3 months now and its still there. Then when i went to frag them, the frag lost thier green center color and looked normal then started to get their color back.
