My final stock list

Just so I can get an idea of if I have too many fish/not the right fish:


90 gallon tank, 58" wide

1 4" Anthias pictilis
1 4" Peppermint hogfish
1 3" Firefish
1 4" Spotted Yellow Eye Tang
1-2 (if I can find a pair) 3" blue spot jawfish




Everyone will get along? Tang big enough for a tang of that nature? Thanks!

I think you are totally fine with that list. Do you have a deep enough substrate for the jawfish? Add some pebbles to the area where they will be, not just sand. And keep the lid on the tank

I don't have them yet, but if/when they become available I'll add some mixed substrate where I want them to live. It's roughly a 2.5-3" sand bed in there now.

Hmmm, not enough IMO. They sit vertically, so I'm thinking the substrate needs to be at least as deep as the fish is long.

The Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific had them with like a 12" sand/pebble bed. Probably the extreme, but as I understand it, when researchers poured a mold material into wild jawfish borrows, they ended up pulling out these huge molds of tunnels, measured in feet. Not saying they won't be happy in less, but within reason I would think.

Before I purchase them, I plan on buying some mixed substrate to put in the area that I want to make their home. It's an area surrounded by live rock, like a small copse. I plan on making that area apporx 6" deep adding the mixed substrate with the existing sand.


Is this OK? Or is it necessary to add substrate to the entire tank? I don't wish to do that, so it'll be a deal breaker if so.

Interesting idea. Add substrate to one area and hope the jawfish use that area. Might work. I personally have never tried that approach. Maybe someone else has....

Well, I just figure they wilil go where they can make a home, instead of going where it's impossible - since making burrows in sand doesn't end up working out.


Hopefully if this is a bad idea, I'll get shot down. I'd hate to do this wrong.

I really like my anthias pictilis. If I get a female, will it cause problems? I know getting a male is most likely out of the question.

I know not many keep pictilis anthias, but can anyone tell me if that combo will be OK?
