My first anemone... has two mouths!

I assume this means it will split soon? It's a green BTA. I didn't see it at the LFS but while acclimating I noticed it clearly has two mouths.

I have a ocellaris/percula pair. (both tank raised) It only took a few hours for the purcula to dive in. He seemed so happy! The ocellaris seemed hesitant until lights-out. She is the dominant one so now she spends the majority of the time in the BTA. The poor purcula is only allowed in now and then. Otherwise he stays brushed up against the outer edge. He has only recently been displaying submissive behavior (spasm) when she picks at him. But they paired up immediately and never leave each other's side. Really happy they like their new nem!

Interesting note, under the hood lights the BTA is long and stringy and moves around the rock. Once the LED strip gets turned on he anchors down and bulbs up quick. It definitely likes LED! (Still waiting for my maxspect razor to come in.)

Anyway just though I'd share. I'll post pics tonight and I'll turn off the LED and see if I can get it to string up again. Otherwise its hard to see the mouths.

It doesn't mean it will split. I think you might think its two mouth but its actually one. Just a gaping mouth trying to acclimate to your system. A pic of the mouth is a sure way knowing if its splitting or gaping. Good luck with the new nem.

thanks. When acclimating it I could see two mouths... One is much smaller. Each day one side shrivels up and it spreads across the rock a little more. But today the whole thing looks not-so-good. Hopefully its just getting used to the tank. I'll update a little later.

I agree that it is not a clear sign that it will split. However, I clearly had a gbta that had two mouths for several months before I sold it off.

Here is a bad pic, but shows the two mouths:

cool. mine looks about the same. here is a terrible photo... but its the best I can get from the angle its at. (the second is just left of the tweezers, partially obscured by a tentacle. )

If it splits... cool, if not, thats cool too... as long as it stays happy! Today has me a bit worried but from what I've read it is normal. Several hours ago the entire nem shriveled up and started spitting red stringy goo out of the larger mouth. I hope this is just poo! As you can see the mouths are protruding as well.

Testing my water again reveals my PH is low (8.1) but everything from salinity, calcium, nitrates, ammonia, temp & Kh are good)

Hopefully its just getting used to its new environment!

I believe your anemone is just acclimating itself to your tank, just give it time and it should do just fine. Good luck!
