pumps off, buy a tripod even if it is just a cheapo from walmart. Eventually you will need to drop a few hundred into one, but $30 is a good investment!

Also, if you go with a cheapo tripod, you can offset any additional movement caused by hitting the button by using a self timer or remote.

I dont know which slr you have, but turn the dial to P mode, set the aperature to 4ish and then set the shutterspeed so you are 1 to 1.5 stops down (the display, or viewfinder, they should be marked like this: -2 | | -1 | | 0 | | 1 | | 2 you want to be between -1 and -2, depending on what aquarium lights you have), You will get much more color balance throughout the whole photo. Again you have to use a tripod for best results.

the tripod I need costs closer to $600 :/, (backpacker)

Stability is #1, with most slr's you would be fine with a cheapo, but put a heavier lens on there and you will have shake. Now, 95% of people wouldnt tell to much of a dif pic to pic IMO, but if you want to take really sharp images, you cant have any shake, so you pay for high quality, compact, lightweight, etc just like everything else you buy.
