My first fragging tank setup

Hi all. Just in case anyone is interested or would be in the future but I'm starting up my first fragging tank.

I got the inspiration after visiting a coral farm in Harlow, Essex and then visiting a shop that was selling an old frag tank for £40. Snapped their hand off, also picked up a smallish tank (not sure on how much it holds yet) as a sump for £15, some piping from screwfix and home I went for a clean up and to build the stand.

Only got to clean the frag tank and build the stand before I had to shoot off for dinner but will document the rest on here for anyone that's interested.

Pics so far...

taken the old backing off (that had been fitting to the INSIDE!!! ***!? And given a good scrub.

All clean. The tank had two holes in the bottom from another application. I thought about drilling/re-drilling but it's only going I. The garage so don't need to look amazingly pretty.

Any advice please let me know. I plan on having a 40mm drain (the 40mm flange was already fitted) and a 22mm return which will be split into two with both heads aiming towards the other end of the tank where the drain is.

Any advice as I go, please chip in.

Looks good, but the way you built the stand all the weight looks to be resting on the screws holding the legs to the top frame. You should add some vertical supports directly under the top frame that rest on the bottom frame on the corners so that they carry the load and not the screws.

+1

A few more boards on the corners will give you peace of mind in knowing there is more then just screws holding up the lions share of the weight.

Hey. Thanks for your replies. I was going to do that (did that on my main tank too) but I ran out of wood. Lol. (Measure twice cut once... should take my own advice)

Going to add those bits on my next set of days off.

Opinions please...

Paint the bottom? Yes or no
Paint the back and sides? Yes or no
If any yes, black or blue? (Pipes and fittings are probably going to be black. Just trying to find out if the aqua flow waste pipes I bought from Toolstation are going to be suitable or not. I've emailed asking if they are food grade PVC, however I've read about people saying they've used "˜non food grade' for years and been perfectly fine. As is the pipes and fitting have cost me a grand total of £13. If I change it all out for proper schedule 40 marine pipes and fittings, I'm looking at£12 just for a bulkhead!
