My first tang

After my blenny and wrasse finally graduated to the DT, I decided to take the tang plung. Got a medium size yellow kole eye tang. Getting used to having a larger fish (looks a little sad in the QT). Never realized these guys like to sleep on the bottom of them tank. It looks kinda weird, hope it is normal. He was very happy in the LFS, they had him about two weeks, and he eats everything. Wish me luck.

Wish me luck.

good luck .

Keep a close eye on him and his water parameters and he should make it through your qt no worse for wear. Dont give into the sad puppy dog eyes and let him out of qt early. Your blenny, wrasse and even the tang will thank you for it :frog:

Good advice. One of my favorite tangs.

The LFS had him in a modified hypo salinity at 1.017. This store keeps all of it's wild caught fish at this level while they are at the store. What I am not sure about (I know they are ice prone) is he is a little blotchy at points. Nothing raised just uneven coloration. He does have one or two pinpoint white specs on him, as I was observing this morning some did seem to go away, so it is likely just a little dirt, but I am not going to start raising his salinity (currently at 1.017) till I am sure I do not need to do true hypo. Seem very scared at this point, and not yet eating, but yesterday was a hard day for him.

After additional information you supplied, I would not raise the SG. Instead I would lower it to 1.009 as it seems likely this fish does have ich (MI).

Ok here is his picture. There are no raised white area, I went and looked again and they were all gone. The fish is not rubbing or anything, moving normally in tank. Those do appear to have been dirt of some type, but there is some variation to his color. Take a look.

I think Steve is right. If it's ich, the white spots come and go every few days. When they go, they come back 100 times more. i would probably wait until this weekend. if you see any more spots, then it'll be time to do hypo.

This was my exact thought. Waiting to get him to eat a bit also. I know he was eating flake at the LFS, what have people been giving their tangs(I do have seaweed but he did not want it earier)? Tonight there are no white spots. Although he managed to squeeze himself into a 1 1/2 inch piece of pvc pipe.

tangs that i have owned have always been really keen on nori (seaweed). I used to buy it in sheets from asian grocery stores. one little note though, make sure the seaweed sheet is dried and not roasted. They both look the same but my fish wouldnt touch the roasted stuff while they went mad for dried.
