My bannerfish has what looks like a popeye in both eyes and they look cloudy. It seems like he can't see as well. Is it bacterial and does he need to be quarantined? One of my other fishes has one eye like this too.

What is the medicine for this? Does anyone know of any threads on this subject so I can educate myself?

Thanks!

Cloudy and enlarged eyes are very good indications of a bacterial infection.

I've found that a treatment with Maracyn in a hospital or quarantine tank works best. You'll generally see marked improvement after only one day. You can find Maracyn at nearly any LFS or pet shop. It doesn't matter whether you use the freshwater or saltwater type.

If you can't remove the fish from the tank, try pulverizing a Maracyn tablet with a hammer and disolve a little bit of the powder in a few drops of hot water. Once disolved, soak a bit of the food in the liquid and feed. This technique has proven quite effective, too.

This type of infection is generally caused by slighlty poor water quality (mostly from overfeeding), or from injuries sustained in fighting amongs themselves.
