My fishes do sleep

My tank runs on a natual sun light cycle. I may turn on the lights now and then when I want to "show off" the tank.

I do it also at feeding time.

My fishes become active when the lights are on.

When the lights are off, they go into their corner to sleep.

Fishes are happy and doing well.

3 years later.

Now we like to use the light as a night light in the house, because of our child.

Question:

Does that mess the fishes up since now they get no sleep?

Will it cause additional stress?

How important is the "natural light cycle?"

I would think if you would slowly change the time cycle over a period of a few week you would be ok. You are not takling abought leaving the light on all night are you?

Yes. From 10pm to 6am.

You could always just reverse your light cycle. Run your lights during the night and off during the day. Depending on how much natural light the room your tank is in, your fish could still sleep (as long as the sun doesn't shine directly on your tank, which could pose other problems anyway)

You don't necessarily need to feed your fish with the lights on either, as long as they are "awake" they'll find the food.

How about using moonlights save electricity? Having light on all the time could increase nuisance algae I believe.

Why not just get a night light and make things much more simple???????????

That's the logical answer, but I just want to think of other alternatives.

Yeah moonlights are the way to go. I don't know about anyone elses opinion but I like the moonlights shimer just as much as the MH. Plus it would make a much better nightlight than MH or PC IMO.

I had lunar lights on my tank and they were AWESOME - I almost liked the look of the tank with the lunar lights better than the MH. Oh - and I used to keep my main lights on from 11 AM - 11PM (so I could see the tank lit up when I got home from work) - I just pulled the shades in the room so that it was relatively dark in the early morning - my fish were fine.
