well while i was at a local fish store, a guy and a girl, apparently co workers were in there talking to the store owner about what they need to get a saltwater fish tank going, and to my surprise i over hear that they need salt, live rock, and live sand, and they can come in the following day to come get a fish. well i wasnt going to say anything since i do like this store and especially one of the owners saying this. so they were ready to buy a 20lb bag of live sand, a hydrometer, a 50 gallon bag of salt, and some live rock. so i said hold on cuz they were going to buy nemo tomorrow and gonna look to find a light to add corals also.

well i had to say something so i told them please dont put anything into the tank for a month, and they got confused, i said yes there are one or 2 fish that could technically make it but i dont recommend it.

well next i ask them what size tank is it, and they tell me its a 5 gallon in their office. i said yeah there is no way you guys will be able to do much with it or even survive in this hobby for more than a month or 2.

i tell them look i have a 20 gallon i took down a couple of days ago, ill let you have it, and ill sell you the light thats basically new for half price. so they follow me to my place and i show them the stuff, i included the 20g long, heater, thermometer, regular filter, koralia nano, and the t5HO 30" for $75. i find that to be fair, thats over $200 worth of stuff if you had to buy new. anyways im explaining the basics of what they need now because they were on their way to mix the salt with some tap water. i told them to get a text kit, and set the tank up. I also told them or him really to get on here to our forum for real advice not that i wouldnt help them if they called me. i also told them i have fuzzy mushrooms and zenia and probably something else to give them when the tank is ready, that we try to help each other out and pay it forward here at stars.

although i was actually busy as hell, i couldnt let them go down that road.

That's good. Gotta look out for the newbies.

I think I've been to all the LFS in EP. Can't really think of who would say that. Hmmmm.

well i wasnt gonna call them out in front of customers, but hey with more stores competing and kids to feed maybe things change, but the weird part is that they bought more stuff actually because of it, even though they saved tons by not buying everything i got them. so it made no sense.

you dont make money from selling extra fish because nemo died in his one day old 5 gallon, you make more money making them understand how to do a tank right and fill it with stuff the right way.

but here is the thing that i can understand, id be sick to my stomach trying to explain to everyperson who comes in asking for nemo. so i can see that part of it.

i didnt even know where to start to explain what all they needed to do. so i would be understanding that end.

About time you do something nice!!! Hahahaha!!! Just messing with you P

I like helping newbs and try to help them as much as i can. Especially when I hear them say, "hey I need a nemo with a nem and a whole bunch of fish and corals while you are at it. What's size tank and lighting do you have? It's a freshwater tank. But what does LIGHTING AND SALT WATER have to do with it?" and here comes Hans esplaining the intricacies of the salt water hobby.

Lucky i was not there. You will be safe to know i will call you out on your BS!!!! I hate that more then anything else!

I did in fact sold my 46 gallon bowfront today to a newbie and like i said take it slow and get the equipment up and going first. Though i will admit i have turned off alot of people when they want a rough price on how much it is going to cost them to get going. :(

Im not going to name any stores.. but theres is one store I really dislike.. I have seen the onwners do that to a bunch of people.. once I tried helping a guy in the store and the owner got mad at me and my brother... he said that he had the healthiest fish and the best prices.. but his prices are the highest and most outrageous.. and his fish are unhealthy.. as well as his corals full of bubble algae and what not... He also got mad at us because we mentioned to one of his "customers" that we were part of the STARS Reef Club.. and he said he didnt want us to come in the store anymore and "advertise"... I think everybody knows or has an idea of to what store is this... They love ripping people off with their "fair" prices :)

i havent heard from them, and i hope they didnt use tap water, good thing i told them also that salt doesnt evaporate so dont top off with more saltwater. haha, no really they were going to. well they have my card so i hope they set it up right.

Good deed u did there pedro its people like daniel / leonor / jimmy and of course star members that helped me alot when I was a newbie thanks alot

it is kinda funny that if you bought all new stuff to set up a 20 gallon that you will spend $300-$400 to start. haha. without any livestock, maybe a snail is included in that price.
