my how 'PERSPECTIVES' change over time!!!

I started off with a 29g tank because that's what Melev had and I followed his build instructions on things. Then he went big with a 55 gallon lol.

That was the standard tank size when I started reading Reefcentral. If you had a 75g or a 90g it was considered a big tank, 120g was huge. Now you need a 180g tank just to be able to post in the large tank forums.

A lot of this hobby is keeping up with the Joneses. Somebody starts off with some new and extravagant, like having a tank built with starfire glass, then the demand to keep up becomes so big that now you can just go out and buy a standard tank with it.

I went from 29g, 75g to 125g in a short time but my husband who's not even into aquariums, wants me to go 210g instead because just from reading over my shoulder, a 125g tank seems too small lol.

Building a new reef tank is like building a garage, no matter how big it will be you'll fill it up in no time and wish you had gone bigger..................... its inevitable!

I went from a 135g to a 240g (Cracked on me) to a 20g to a 75g to a 180g... I am pretty satisfied with the size of the 180.

where does it go from here for you ???
(as far as your changing 'size' perspectives on your reef)

in your profile i see you have a 600 gal tank...
gees - do you want to go bigger???

seems like at that point - one would be 'topped' out!!!

perhaps even at that point
deciding to go down in size ???

this would be the flip side to this thread
we all talk about our changing perspectives over time... going bigger... then when we finally get about topped out (like 600gallons??? ;) )... what happens then??? wanting to downsize at that point ???

anyone go huge
then decide to go even bigger
:eek2: :D

well then you have pretty good 'perspectives' on different sized reefs - so perhaps you found the right size for you or that you feel comfortable with...

thats probably what it boils down to
eventually finding the right size for oneself...

one that a person feels they can comfortably handle, manage, etc etc - SUCCESSFULLY that is!

in considering upgrading
seriously questioning whether once i upgrade (into the deep blue wonder) if will find it takes too much time, or too much money etc... and wish i would have just perfected the current size tank that i have... or will it go the other way and want to go bigger.

already deeply question
the amount of 'time' i spend on it... as well as the amount of money i want to continue spending (monthly/yearly operating costs)... although our family does get a great deal of pleasure from reefing... in the end i wonder if the money is better spent elsewhere/invested etc... and at times feel guilty about the amount of time i spend on the reef that would be better spent elsewhere - like w/family etc

I think it ends when you run out of room and the ability to afford a larger tank shelter (i.e. house). :D

why let that stop you ???

(hey like the name!)

funny a 180 in the large reef forum - seems (((insignificant)))
:rolleye1:

hey you are lucky then -
re your husband supporting your addiction!... whats holding you back from the 210???
:p

we're all talking about this being an addiction, but i have a different view..

for me, at least, it's a God Complex, i've concluded.

here are some advantages to it being a God Complex vs an addiction:

1) i'm the one in control, not the tank
2) i'm a Good G0d, a Kind One, by doing my best to take care of everything in the tank
3) removing or losing an individual is 'G0d's will'
4) i take responsibility for the health of the tank very personally
5) when inhabitants thrive, that means they are pleasing me, and they are therefore blessed.
6) others cannot question the will of G0d. I make it so.
7) the Wife does not try to talk me out of anything tank-related anymore.

heh heh

Cons:
- the Evolution theory doesn't fit in the tank. all inhabitants are placed there. Creationism is incorrectly assummed by the orgainisms in the tank. Sometimes little Hare Kristna hermit crabs harass the other fish.

very entertaining reply!!
i think you could have created a thread on that reply alone!

very good.

it is 'creationism' extreme!

perhaps your right - its not an addiction
but a GOD-PLEX!

I don't think there is a limit on what we want. If money and space was not an issue, i believe we will own a reef that we all can swim in to placement our beautiful corals.

Haha
