Mine were off between the two........hydrometer was reading a hair under 30 while the refractometer reads 35.

My results don't prove anything, everyone else I've heard always says their hydrometers were way off. But with proper maintenance like weekly or daily cleaning you get better usage. My hydrometer is two years old and got washed with clean water after every use. Now that I have a refractometer it's gonna sit on a shelf and collect dust.

Agreed... But it does not take much to make a hydrometer (particularly the inexpensive ones) way off.

Give it a year and your swing arm hydrometer will be way off. Go old school and buy a glass scientific grade hydrometer.

If you think your hydrometer is accurate then I will take pics when I get home(if I can find my hydrometer) of my hydrometer reading and then my digital refractometer and you will see they aren't the same reading and can be off by a few points or so. That isn't much of a problem until about 3 months from now when you have been adjusting your salinity a few points the wrong way you end up with some serious issues

My hydrometer (red sea) was 0.003 off so when it read 1.023 it was actually 1.026. Now imagine if I had corrected the salinity to 1.026 or accidentally gone to 1.027 it would actually be 1.029-30....

Bad hydrometers. There is no excuse not to have a refractometer, they are $25 on eBay.

i would double check those glass hydrometers against a refractometer, i bought a quality german made glass hydrometer thinking my corallife hydrometer was reading bad and trusted the glass hydrometer, only to find out (with a shops refractometer calibrated in my face) it was off .003, and salinity read 1.029
