My interesting new. "turf" algae

I had been over feeding the tank a bit deliberately, having a big new addition to the tank with a voracious tusk (poor thing jumped out of the tank two weeks in and we lost him [emoji24][emoji22]). I expected some form of algae or other to rear it's head.

Recently I found this clever beauty growing in the sump, some kind of turf algae. It's super matted on the glass. I think my hermit crab likes eating it.

No idea exactly what it is, but it never ceases to amaze me how new things pop up that you have never seen before. Life... Finds a way!

The one on the right is the chaeto.

But can you turn up the pink/purple a tad bit more.. On the scale of 0 to ridiculous you are only at a 94 :p

Could be Ulva intestinalis. I have some in my sump, grows like a weed but watch it doesn't get too close to an overflow or screen, its great at clogging things. Fish and pods like it too.

Thank you, I will look this up. I did see my swallowtail angels go after a piece of it that I put up in the tank. Would it be worth 'cultivating'?

I find it easier and faster to grow than the regular sheet ulva, although more of a hassle to feed as it won't stay in the algae clip very well. Fish love it though, and the stuff that gets free, they do find. I keep it on top of a single layer of bioballs, the algae seems to tangle into the bioballs OK and it pretty much keeps it where I want it. Rock rubble would probably do fine too. It doesn't seem to root into sand well, at least not in my fuge.
