My Intro.

After a month or so of lurking, I decided to register yesterday at RC.

My name is Scott. I'm 31 years old and I live in a small suburb in the Twin Cities. I've been around aquariums for most of my life because my parents really enjoyed them. My last experience was approx. six years ago. I had a 90-gal. peaceful reef tank consisting of a handful of fish, Fiji LR, live sand, soft corals, inverts and even a few SPS corals. Due to financial hardship at the time, I sold everything... and regret it to this day. :(

I am now married and tossed out the idea to my wife in regards to getting a reef tank. I feel she will crack soon and allow this to happen. After several weeks of "Can I get one?", "Can I get one?", "Can I get one?" - She has undoubtedly reached her breaking point.

There is no way that I can possibly jump in feet first, so to speak and do everything all at once nor can I afford a large set-up at the moment. I am, however, intrigued by the posts I have read in regards to the Nanocube and Aquapod set-ups. :D I have enjoyed reading threads in which members have sort of "journaled" their accounts here at RC. It is interesting reading and from prior experience alone, I know the hobby, in general, is a constant learning experience.

1.) For those of you who own the 24G Nano and/or Aquapod - what have been the most common upgrades for you? My biggest downfall is I am not the most innovative DIY individual. I have zero ability when it comes to assembly or maintenance. Hahahaha. I have read thus far that lighting upgrades, fan upgrades, and a few others are "must do" options.

The lighting used on 90-gal. reef aquarium was 250W MH lighting with Actinics... I really liked the "blue hue" of the lighting. What has to be done to achieve this with an Aquapod?

2.) My second question is in regards to the noise level. One thing that I despised about my 90-gal. lighting was the noise that the fans produced. The room that is most used by my wife and I is our upstairs loft. I don't feel I'd really enjoy the aquarium as much if it were anywhere else in the house. The loft is small but it is also used as our 'home theater' area. We watch a lot of movies and with that said, I would not want there to be a lot of distracting noise... is that asking for too much? I only ask because it sounded like a turbo-prop airplane starting up when the MH lighting on my previous aquarium fired up each morning. :D

3.) For those of you with either a Nano or Aquapod - I guess I'd also be interested in knowing where you obtained your equipment... online? LFS? Any links you might be able to also provide would be appreciated. I did find quite a bit already... but thought I'd throw it out there anyway... :)

I dont have a 24 gallon nano but I do have the 12 gallon. The only problem if you didnt find out already was the 24 gallon nano cubes have had problems with the glass cracking. Not sure if that problem was addressed yet.

My 12 gallon nano I bought from my LFS, I did the extra return pump mod to bring more flow into the tank, I also did the overflow or surface skimer mod, to get rid of the extra proteins that will float on the watr surface making it look like a oil slick.
That is as far as I went with mine. Others have used halides etc for increased lighting.

As far as noise Mine is dead silent, the only noise I get is when my timer turns my lights and fans on. The fans are a little noisy for the first 5 minutes, but after they warm up it is silent, and I dont even know the tank is running.

Since you arent the DIY kinda you can buy your Nano cube here and tell tham what upgrades you want. They will perfom the upgrades such as lighting, water flow etc and it is all warranteed.

Here are pics of the mods I did.

The first consists of me cutting out acrylic and siliconing it in on the top intake screen.

The second is where I made my own surface skimmer across the back of the tank, and the extra return pump for added flow. The pump sits on top of the original one.

The third is the extra return outlet into the tank, I can direct it anywhere for added flow.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I did find a couple of threads in regards to individuals receiving 24G Aquapods cracked... but I thought that was just due to shipping...? You're saying they actually crack when filled with water? Not cool. :(

I honestly think I need to see one up close and personal... I like the idea of the Aquapod shipping with a skimmer, overflow, etc, etc... but I am not quite understanding where everything goes...? As for the return... you utilized an external sump with yours?

Not sure about the aquapods but the 24 gallon nano cubes crack during use when filled.
Everything goes in the far rear or back of the tank, everything is built in for you.
If you look at the second pic posted above, that is where all the filter media, retunr pump etc is located. Once you close the hood it is all concealed from view.
