That is very pretty. My girlfriend is setting up a seahorse tank and is finishing up the cycling, so it should be soon!!! :)

very cool.. I am curious...is that a wine glass in there? and what is it for? You will have to forgive my ignorance if it is something very simple and obvious.. :D

It was orginally put in as a feeding station where I could put the mysis shrimp and the ponies would eat out of the glass.

It is true they will do that but the Mysis shrimp are too boyant to stay in the glass.

ahh..I see. I was just curious if it was something like that or if it just gave them something else to hold on to. Wasn't sure.

Nice tank, here's my 29g seahorse tank a little over a month ago. The bottom is now entirely covered with caulerpa prolifera.

Watch that feather caulerpa, it's a great nutrient absorber and if not pruned regularly will go sexual. It's not as detrimental as when grape caulerpa goes, but all the same something to watch for.

Very Nice, what species are those ponies, kuda or reidi?

Also what kind of lighting is that?

I know about it going asexual, mine did, totally clouded the tank but it went back very quick. When it did I panicked and talked to Joe Anderson and he told me everything was fine, my caulerpa went sexual and it would sprout everywhere and my reply was cool, I love those little palm trees.

They are Kuda females and it is a 130 watt PC fixture. I don't know about the effect of Xenia on seahorse fry or very young seahorses. If you're going to raise fry though, you don't want to necessarily keep them in the main tank anyway. So the question is do they effect juvenile seahorses, I would say no, but I'm not a an expert :) Mine hitch to the stalks of the Xenia without problem.

Well my male is in his nursery tank now with nothing in there that could possible hurt him or the babies (I hope).

Ponies can breed every 15 days. Mine are constantly doing the little pony dance. We will see, his pouch is swelling so he should toss foals soon. The micro BBS is on standby ready to go, got selco formula and spirilina powder ready to gutload the micro BBS so all is go.

Very nice tanks.

Herpchat, you may want to try for something a little shorter in height as a feeding station, with something to hitch to. Lots of people use clam shells. Also, if you thaw the mysis in SW, they will sink when completely thawed. You may have to turn off the filtration systems to keep them from being blown out.

Your horses look like kuda, am I right? I think kuda are the same as reidi as far as baby needs, in that the babies will float for the first couple of months. If so, they will need a kreisel system set up to be successful in raising them. Basically, that is a set up where the babies cannot reach the top of the water to ingest air.
They are also born a little larger, so newly hatched BBS will be OK for the 1st few days, but will need to be grown out after that.

I'm sure you already know about it, but there is lots of good info on www.seahorse.org.

DJC - very pretty tank. I've never had the prolifera or the stalky caulerpa (I think you are calling it feather) go sexual. (I'm looking at the top and 2nd pics - it's not feather, I just can't remember it's name right now. Too early and not enough caffeine) Are you keeping only females to prevent babies, or just can't find mates?
Also, the LFS around here regularly trade me frags or other types of caulerpa for my excess. I've got about a dozen different kinds. Maybe something to look into.

As far as the xenia - it won't hurt the horses or their babies - tho I can't think of any reason it should be in a baby tank, especially a kreisel set up. Most keepers have their babies in bare bottom tanks for ease of cleaning.

Good luck to both of you, and if you have any questions, just let me know.

Howdy April;

They are reidi. The caulerpa is Caulerpa trifaria and is one of my favorites. As to the babies I got the microBBS in decap and have Selco paste and Spirilina powder for enrichment. I quit with the feeding station and just put it in front of their face and they do fine. I have had people tell me they have raised reidi without kreisel system although I have looked into it. Round tanks are a bit hard to find.
