I don't think it is a good idea to keep any fish with a mantis shrimp..

let's see, a watchman goby, a clownfish, and a damselfish in addition to the small lionfish.

he's only been in there a couple of weeks but doesn't seem to be interested in the fish. i make sure he stays pretty well fed but i will be moving him to his own tank fairly soon.

Typhon, i have to completely disagree with you here...
if it was a spearer type, then its a definate that you shouldn't keep fish, but with bashers you'll be ok.
Bashers naturally eat shellfish, and while they could potentially kill fish, chances are that if they are well fed they won't even hunt these
(i have proof... come see my tank!!! theres still one hermit (out of three i bought for him a month ago) and 5 snails outta 5... i also made him eat a little one... it was awsome to hear, but i wish i coulda watched. the only reason he ate the snail is cause i flipped it over in front of him, and he watched it try to flip over, and saw the soft part....)
but mines in with a damn-sel and they sleep together on a constant baisis... George hasn't even thought about bashing him, and blue fish doesn't seem to worry too much about it either. This morning George what out swimming around, PLAYING with lil blue... yes, playing.... they would swim side by side, then play 'sudden death' and see who would get closest to the tank side w/out crashing.... blue won, but it was funny to see.
so i suppose it might be a problem if the mantis was alot bigger than the fish, but my George an lil blue get along great.
I'm almost tempted to bring lil blue back and get a clownfish..... nahh, blue adds personality!!!!!
but, as for the pics...
how big is your lionfish? i'm looking at making a scorpionoid tank, and like the fu-manchu and leaf-fish.... i have a 29 gallon, which both would be fine in....
maybe george could run around in it too? :)

mine is pretty tiny - about 1 1/2 inches but he's in a 90G tank so he's got plenty of growing room :D

Word,

The species is Gonodactylaceus ternatensis. The sex is male. This is the largerst of all the Gonodactylidae. THe largest one I have seen was 12 cm. The species is found in scattered locations in the Indo-Pacific. I worked on it at Phuket, Thailand and have seen it in Indonesia. There are also specimens that I think are the same species from the southern GBR. In general, this species lives subtidally and often is associated with live coral.

If I'm right on the ID, the meral spots will be yellor to orange. The females look the same except that the antennal scales that are blue in the male are yellow in the female.

I anyone sees one of these animals for sale, please let me know. I would really like to make some measurements on the blue scales.

Roy

i wish i had a decent camera so my pics would turn out nicer :(

anyhow, if it is indeed a gonodactylaceus ternatensis and you need one for research, i wouldn't mind maybe trading him to you for one you maybe don't need or something. i can get another but it would probably be what it is supposed to this time :)

anyhow, drop me an email if you're interested.
