My Midas Blenny jumped into my overflow? How to retrieve him?

Any ideas on how to get him out? My net barely fits into there with the pipes....so?

My only thought is to tape cardboard up along the back sides, in the event he tries jumping out again he gets redirected back into the tank.

You could try catching the Blenny with your hands. Fish are quick, but in a confined space like that it shouldn't be very difficult.

If you can pull the standpipes you've got room to work. A mirror and strong light help. BUT---the tall standpipe sits on a grill that is supposed to keep stuff from going down it, and the fish can get trapped against that and crushed, so be careful. Try to get him up high in a corner. If he's very small, otoh, he may show up down in your sump and you can catch him there: just put a temporary sponge or filter barrier in the heater area so he can't get to the pump and be made into chowder.

I think I saw someone filled their over flow with poly filter little by little...start at the bottom and slowly add more so the fish comes to the top.

I usually drain my overflow and take out the pipes

I take out my drain pipe and stick a small net down and try to catch them in the corner. I have had to catch blennies and clownfish in the overflow before. I made a screen to go over the overflow to keep them out now. Haven't had a fish in there in over 6 months.

Plastic needlepoint canvas (your hobby or embroidery store) makes a fine white flexible mesh that can be cut to shape with scissors or stitched with fishing line...real useful stuff to have a few sheets of. Much finer than eggcrate or gutter guard.

Thx for all advice. I will take the advice to cover my overflow, and maybe the tank too now. And I caught him about midnight. Lights were out and he was pretty drowsy. I tried the water bottle trap but he didn't bite. Old fashioned net while he is asleep worked.
