My minimalistic 180g SPS tank

well i stopped dosing the fws and coral booster due to thinking that may be putting the copper into my tank. my corals have not looked as good since I stopped when everything else has been the exact same. (I stopped on the 18th) I am going to start dosing them again tonight along with doing at least one 20g water change a week to see if I can get this copper and other unwanted metals out of my tank. I am going to do this for a month and then sent another test to triton. If my unwanted levels are still high, then I know I am missing something in the tank somehow. I also am going to dose full strength dose of fws and coral booster into a half gallon or 1 gallon of my tank water and see if copper shows up there or if it shows up before i dose that. that should help me decide if theyre doing something in those levels or not.

Hey Cody, have you tried cuprisorb by Seachem? I think it's a resin specifically designed to bind copper. Much better than poly filter..

Hey Matt,

I am picking some up tonight. I am also stopping all the dosing besides 2 part. I am going back to the very basics, doing 10% water changes a week, skimmer, fuge, good light, feed a ton and 2 part. I am hoping this will get everything moving in the right direction. Just wish I could see if my water changes and cuprisorb were making any improvement in the heavy metals without sending in a $50 test.

What are you using for water movement and is there any rust or corrosion on the drive shafts?

3 jabeo pp15s and a gyre 150. no I checked them all and found no rust or corrosion. I wish it was something that simple.

Just did my first 30gallon water change and I may try to do another one on Monday.

just got done my second water change since i got the extra di canister an carbon block. the coral are starting to look a ton better, i think it was the lack of water changes and high unwanted heavy metals that were taking a hit on them

as of now dosing nothing besides 2 part at 24ml a day, was only 18 a day before water changes so that is good to see that.

Good luck, Cody.
Hopefully the fresh saltwater will make the difference..
It certainly helped one of my tanks, a while back. I started to have all the hard corals struggle. Lps were detaching from the base and sps were declining with stn. Over the course or a month , I did multiple 50% waterchanges and it completely turned around the tank. I blame everything on depletion and accumulation. The wcs rebalanced everything.
I hope it works for you.

Hopefully you are on the right track.

I hope so, still going to continue monitoring all the params every day.

Sounds promising!

I am hoping this is what it is too. The coralline growth has also took off a ton too since I have started the water changes. I am going to do another either Friday or Saturday. I am adding muritic acid to bring the alk down to 7-8 on the IO but so far that has worked good.

The pieces that had shown decline are looking a lot better and mostly after I blew the algae off the top it is not growing again and some even have PE coming out from the "burnt" tips or whatever was going on. Going to try to take some pictures every other day of the corals to track "hopefully" the progression.

In other news for my other tank that I set up. 240g long that is 96 inches. I have finally cycled it and added a large blue angelfish, male naso tang with streamers, coral beauty and a kole tang. This is just going to be a FOWLR but it was good to finally add fish to it.

Glad your corals are starting to bounce back! Whenever my corals start to look a little off, I just do a few water changes and they look happy again.

That's cool you're setting up a FOWLR. It's going to be it's own system?

Yeah I am hoping they continue to get better but any progress I will take.

The FOWLR is on the other side of the house, in the dining room so it is its own system. So far it is taking away my attention from my SPS with the awesome fish in there but I am sure that will only last so long since they are brand new

Alk has been 7 or 7.3 everytime I have tested it last week, since the corals look as good as ever since I moved my tank last year I am going to keep them here. The PE they have during the day and also during the night is the best I have seen since I moved houses.

Good to hear Cody, hopefully smooth sailing continues.

We'll have to work on your BLUE pictures. :D

haha thank you! Yes we do!!! I am only using my Iphone and those were with all T5s on, will have to use a filter next time but sometimes it looks fake with the colors

Good to hear. Now just leave it alone and keep it steady and it'll be great.

Yup, I am not dosing anything besides 2 part and doing a water change everyday

What bulb combo are you running?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

6 blue plus and 2 coral plus. I was running 4/4 but I had 2 new blue plus sitting around and I took the coral plus out instead of switching the blue. I may go back to 4/4 next time I order 2 bulbs.

Nice Cody. Now comes the hard part: doing nothing and waiting and watching.
I've never been able to do this part!
