My new 210

OK here's the scoop. I am on my way to pick up my new 210gal acrylic tank. My plans are to move everything out of my 125 and my 75 into it. The tank is 72"longx26"x26". So what oppions on lighting does the panel here have. Also what size sump would some of you run. I want to keep the tank as low to the floor as possible for working the tank with out a ladder. I plan on starting the build of the stand tomorrow. Jason

i think it would be cool to do (1) vho actinic. (3) 175 watt 15 ish k metal halides
prob like 3 rows of 2 39 watt 460ish nm t5's. this would be like medium light on a tank that size. you could alway do 250 watt halides and an extra vho or row of t5s to bump it up to higher light
 
You have a good memory Mebo. I hate VHO's. I have 2x250w MH on hand and 2x54w T-5ho's. We like LPS and softies for the most part I have a couple of sps.I got a great deal. The guy wants to trade me even for my 75gal. This one was to big for him. It has never had water in it so it is actually brand new.I could'nt pass on the deal.

Ideally I think I'd try to add one more 250MH. You could run 1 daylight and 1 actinic in the T5's for fish viewing thoughout the day, and then either run the MH's all at once for a few hours or stagger them to mimic the sun moving across a natural reef during the day. And if it were me, I'd stick with bluer bulbs -- in the 14 to 20k range.
Anyway, with that light you should be able to keep about anything.

I like your FWIW you always add. I do also have a 400w with PC assist in the garage. I thought that would be over kill. I am tring to work with what I have $ is more than tight. I am going with 14K bulbs, I had already ordered them just never installed them. I am goingto take my 125 and have it drilled and an OF box installed before I set it back up. It has 2x175 right now but it is a shallower tank. How is that waving hand xenia doing?

XENIA is doing good. Just waiting for it to grow more. Im Picking up a 55 this weekend, and gonna use those lights on that frag tank im building.
 
Jason, I hope you and your IV are getting along ok. When does the IV come out? Do you work for yourself or a company? What type of carpentry do you do? How long before you are back at work?
 
tbagnall, the IV should come out this weekend. I do all kinds of carpentry from replacing doors and windows to fixing leaking roofs. I worked for a large commerical company for many years and the was laid off with 71 other people when work got short. I ussually do alot of decks and porches and what I like to call honey-do-list work. So for now I work for myself.
 
I have'nt heard anything from her lately. I can not wait to get rid of this IV. As soon as it comes out I can go back to doing some work. Thank you for all your thoughts.

Difficult to reflect such a complex array of bulbs effectively isn't it?
I've always felt simple is best, and often times most efficient.
Based on the bracing on the top, determine the most effective way to cram luminarcs in. Then play with bulb combos and wattages.
 
Also, consider your cooling scheme. $125 will buy a great air-cooled reflector with glass. Nice b/c you can get close to the water and not worry about broken bulbs from splashing.
Grainger has cheap squirrel cage (shaded pole) fans that can easily be adapted to ductwork. Also look at www.surpluscenter.com
It's one of my favorites for that type of stuff.
