I am new to this hobby. I only started keeping salt water fish since this past December of 05. This is my first tank.

Good eye! Yes that is a hippo tang. I know the tank is a little overcrowded. I recently purchased a 125 aga. Just waiting for it to cycle right now.

It looks good. Well I hope your 125 cycles fast because the purple tang and the hippo tang might start fighting in a tank that is to small for them. I am glad that you plan on moving them up to a 125 gallon.

Both tangs have been in their co existing peacfully for over a month and a half now. But not to worry. The 125 gallon tank is almost done cycling! I couldn't pass them up! Such a great deal. I got the purple tang for only $50.00 and the hippo $30. Fish of this size should cost a bit more. My LFS is the bomb.

yeah a purple tang like that should be around 75 dollars. and the hippo should be at atleast 60 dollars. Are you moving everything in that tank up to your 125, or just the tangs?

I am thinking about screwing off the standard lighting canopy and getting an aqua medic ocean light 250 w to hang over the nano. Do fish have a tendency to jump out of uncovered tanks???

gobies blennys and fire fish might jump. I had a midas in my 90 gallon and he never jumped. The back of my tank is open so he had the option to jump. The clowns won't jump. Do you have any gobys or blennys? I think you should be ok.

No gobbies or blennies. I do have a green mandarin in there however, but I don't think mandarins are much of jumpers either.

Here is a list of all the corals, fish, and inverts I have in my tank.

Fish: Blue hippo tang, purple tang, flame angel, true percula pair, 3 green chromies, bartletts anthias, and green mandarin.

Coral: Zoanthids, sinularia leather, frogspawn, bright green star polyps, pulsing xenia, montipora digitata, really green fuzzy SPS(not sure the name), and a completely purple acropora 3inch frag with yellow polyps.

Clams: Two crocea and two maxima's

Invertebrates: White BTA with blue tips, cleaner shrimp, a few blue leg and red leg hermit crabs, and astrea snails.

Get those tangs out!! As quickly as possible!!

How long have you had that mandarin? Is it eating frozen food?

I will say that your tank looks nice, but I really wish you would have researched more before you started. Your fish list is shocking; just about every rule of fish is broken with this tank. I know you apparently have a 125 setup coming, but experienced members know that every person who keeps a tang(s) in a small tank always seems to have a larger tank "in the process" and that we should "not worry." I'm not saying you are lying at all, I'm just saying from experience that I've rarely seen these projects be completed. If yours does, splendid, as your tangs will live and grow.

People here at Reef Central are ALWAYS willing to help newbies, so PLEASE ask as many questions as you need and/or want!! I hate to see stuff like this, no matter how good a deal. It is worth the extra 20 bucks to know they will not die of tank sized stress.

My opinion,
Ben

Oh my fish are all fine. They are fat and plump and I them only the best food with a great variety. Weekly 5 gallon water changes. Fresh reef carbon run on a continual basis. I feed my mandarin live brine shrimp that I hatch myself and whatever amphipods or copepods it can get by grazing on the live rock. And I can assure you I do have a 125 cycling as we speak! In the mean time my tangs are hardly dying of stress. I will post a picture of it later on.

Ohh ok i thought you were just going to leave the hippo in the 24 and i was like WOAH but makes me feel beter its going in a 125 also like the tank!
