My new 450 Gal "pail"

Welcome to RC Skom!!!!

You might also look at this thread. It is a monster build in Canada. It is also using Orphek LED Aquarium Lights.

Simone linked me to that build in an email before. That's a real nice setup as well.

Awesome tank, such an inspiration. I was looking for some other tanks with Orphek's 156 and google brought me here :) I got 3 of the pr156w units and was trying to figure out a good photo period.

Since Orphek took their forum down, it's tough to find answers, or get information. Could you share your photo period? Like how many hours moonlights and how many hours full lighting?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks skom

I'm using 10 hours of full light (blue & white) but decided to go down to 8 hours because of too massive growths and Photosynthesis.

What you call Moon lights, are working 90 minutes before full light and 2 hours after.

I just added the Orphek DIF100B (2 blue multy chip led units, added to 6 PR 156).
I love the blue tint it's giving to the tank.
Here is a pic'

My 500 gallon tank will delivered in about 8 weeks. I was on the fence with MH or LED’s after reading this thread I am going to go with LED lighting.
Thank you for sharing your tank with us.
Your tank looks great!!!!!!

wow, incredibly healthy colorful corals, great job, you have used every square inch of that tank, beautiful!

what is your Par at the bottom of the tank?

Thanks Elliot,
I really hate seeing the rocks.:eek1:

The tank is 35 '' deep, and It's 250 Par at the bottom.

that's a lot of Par at the bottom, surprised you didn't have issues acclimating your corals to that much light

Actually I had some issues but not exactly the ones you mean.

Since I was used to a very stable Calcium, Magnesium and KH levels, I didn't expect the higher demand and consumption by corals under leds (higher par=higher photosynthesis) .
One morning I noticed a drop of PH and measured very low KH, followed by very big drop in Calcium and Magnesium (and I guess many other trace elements).

It took some time to fix it but some corals were effected by it.

Your tank is absolutely stunning! I am thinking of converting to LEDs in the future, I think I would like to build (or I should say have my electronically savvy friend build) an LED fixture so I can get more of the different wavelength LEDs available.

BMCO, Great tank planning a 55"L x 36D x 26"tall tank. Would 2 156W units be enough? My depth(not height) is similar to yours so I thought I may need to use 3 mounted just like yours. If I choose the 120 degree beam models since my tank will be only 26" tall I thought a may have enough light spread with only two units. Any thoughts?
thanks,
Mike
