My New AGE tank build! It's big! ~1500g DT

So I finally had a chance to play with some rockscaping. Apparently 800lbs of dry rock isn't enough, so I had to use tinfoil to fill in the holes. Here is what I am thinking. I think it looks better in person, the tinfoil is screwing with the look. I made a few shelves with the tinfoil to add interest. Right now the dimensions are 134x55x48.

I'll try to get more rock tomorrow and fill it out, but I already bought out the LFS I am afraid.

So I hit a couple of Petcos today for the $1/gallon sale and picked up these 40g breeders. I'm not sure how exactly I'm going to use them, but for 67% off, it was hard to resist. I plan on at least one becoming a QT tank, and the others could maybe serve as fuge etc.

OT new car

OT new car

All of these large tank builds seem to include pictures of cool cars so I thought I would play along

So my son got to an age where I needed to buy him his first car. I really like the styling of the new Corvette Stingray so I got him one of those.

He saw it in the garage and was EXTREMELY excited! He ran inside after my wife showed him his new car and thanked me several times.

We took it out for a test drive just as the sun was going down and he decided it is "really fast!" The first two people to drive by stopped to exclaim what an awesome car it is!

Unfortunately, it was too fast or he is too inexperienced a driver and he hit a curb and dinged up the front bumper. There is now a streak of yellow on the curb where he hit it!

Oh well, the first ding is the hardest in my experience and after that you don't notice as much...or so I keep telling myself. Maybe I should have gotten him something slower...

Here's a fuzzy pic, potentially because of my poor camera skills or more likely because of the speed at which he was travelling.

on a more serious note...

We got some of the air handling done today. I now have a 4" vent with a humidity sensing fan going out of the fish room. In addition I have a 4" vent with a regular fan going into the fish room. Hopefully those will handle the humidity that the ~2,000 gallons will create.

If that fails, then there is also the 1 ton mini split that I had lying around that I had installed in the fish room. The condensation drain runs right into the sewer, kinda a neat solution I think. Hopefully between the two they will handle it.

Thats a very nice corvette! Im so jealous! The build is looking great so far. What do you plan to do with the old tank while you setup the new and let it cycle? isnt it going directly in the same place?

Got it at costco. It had dropped 30% from the last time I saw it so couldn't resist!

I actually plan on letting the old tank remain while the new one cycles. The new one will back up to the fish room which is nice as opposed to being on the opposite wall where the old one is.

If I hadn't forgot you had a young child I would have said thats a great gesture. It still is but I was waiting to see a $100,000 car damaged. The build is going great so far.

thanks! I don't think I would get him a 100k car for his first car. I had too many friends in high school that totalled several cars within a short period of time. I'm thinking something large with lots of steel, no fiberglass.

I haven't had much progress with work and kids. Also I tweaked the dimensions which pushed tank completion back from next week to probably mid May. I got a layout from AGE yesterday though which is kinda fun.

the closed loop holes need a bit of tweaking but the general idea is right.

Funny I called phishy buziness to get a quote on a age tank of similar dimensions and he told me about your tank he just ordered. Do you know know what the steel bracing will look like on the tank? How big is the steel and does it run vertically on the corners?

Any more info on what equipment your using for closed loop? Skimmer? Pumps?

Looking forward to seeing it in the new room.

He said he ordered two more this week, so I guess he's doing a pretty brisk business with AGE right now. The steel is only on the top and bottom I believe.

here is a pic of danfeig's AGE tank from his thread. You can see the steel on it. For reference his tank is 8' long by 4' high, so you can kinda see how big the steel is.

I plan on running MP40's and MP60s for flow along with two sicce syncra 16's for the closed loops. Probably another sicce but smaller for the return pump. Maybe not actually since I need to do 4 times turnover right? So that's about 6000gph. I may need two return pumps. :)

I was planning on upgrading the skimmer later from the one I have. It will take me a long time to add fish with my QT protocol, so I will have probably 6 months until I need a bigger one. I think it's a reef octopus SS 5000.

Ya I have been looking for equipment and thinking around 5000gph for my return would be sufficient but after head pressure there isn't to many pumps that are available. I wish someone would build a dc pump with higher flow rates than are available.

Do you already have the vortechs? If not take a look at pmrodgers thread. He is just now testing out the hydro wizard medium which looks promising for large tanks.
