my new build (120 gallon) - picture heavy!

All,

A couple of months ago I started building my 120 Setup.. (un)fortunately, I had to start from scratch... and when I say from scratch, I mean that I started out in a room without walls, without flooring, without ceiling, without electricity... you get the picture

Since my residence right now is not permanent, I wasn't sure on how I wanted to move forward, as you all know a tank move is very painful and difficult. I decided, since it will be 1.5-2 years until I will purchase a home and home, to set up a tank regardless, and do it right..

Once I move, I will build a better/bigger tank in the new home, transfer livestock/equipment and use the tank I start right now for a different project (fish only perhaps)

Then I had to decide on the size... I started thinking about a 90 gallon, got annoyed with the HUGE jump in price from 75 to 90, so decided on a 75 gallon... got a promotion at work, so ultimately ended up buying a 120 instead

The below process took place over several months, as my work keeps me very busy and I don't have a lot of time!!

120 gallon DT & 40 gallon sump (also a glimpse of how my living quarters looked right after building walls, but before finishing them:

After building the room and adding drywall, I had to decide where to put the tank.. I decided on the location below because there is a closet/pantry right behind it.. Nice and convenient to drill through and put the sump/plumbing in!

for overflow/plumbing I decided to do a BeanAnimal C2C (almost c2c) setup. Purchased the glass at a local shop and started drilling/siliconing:

Sump all ready:

By this time the fish-tank-room was completed and I gather most of my supplies/purchases related to the fish-tank together, and made a picture.

The floating wall (gray board) actually has a led light behind it to allow for any color light to shine over the wall.. for those interested, here's a link to a minute-long video of the things it can do:

Time to build the stand:... I never really built a "fancy stand" before, but figured I would give it a try.. I purchased a Router, Kreg Jig and what not to accomplish this.. After approximately a week of labor, to make all patterns/molding/panels myself, i'm not unhappy with the final result! Still have to build a canopy, but that can wait...

End result with the backlights on Red and the actinics on the tank:

I am now working on finishing the closet where all plumbing/filtration will go (just mudded the drywall yesterday) but anticipate to have some water in the tank by this weekend.

Very excited to see life in this thing!

I will continue sharing pictures and updates as I move along.. can't wait to get this going :)

I will be up in the Rochester area around April 20th.. with some luck the tank will have cycled and be ready for some corals so I can raid the local stores and maybe even visit some old friends!

Really nice! I've got the same 120 + 40BR sump combo. Very nice work on the stand, too! So, is the closet behind at the same floor level? I'm also curious about the eggcrate on the bottom of the tank. What about the back of the tank - are you going to paint it?

That LED board thing is crazy. As in, crazy awesome.

Closet is indeed the same floor level, nice and conveniently accessible!

Eggcrate on the bottom of the tank to stop the rocks from shifting on the bare glass. I will add about 2 inch of aragonite sand. That should all work out fine.. i hope

back will stay clear, i heard it's better for corals, and I don't mind it, seeing the background is part of the "picture"..

That's pretty creative, looks good so far Ruud!

Thanks! I read you're coming back into the hobby as well, very exciting to keep an eye on that :)

also excited to see what the local (boston/manchester) community has to over for corals. If i find something good, I'll be sure to share with you guys!

This hobby is a hard one to stay away from.. it's very rewarding to see the outcome of your work and on top of that I missed the community..

I lived in the Boston area for a year and the reefing community there was bigger than the Buff-Roch-Syr area combined! Probably 2nd only to SoCal.

Good! I actually live in New Hampshire, but I work in Northborough (Worcester area)... I will soon (hopefully) purchase a home somewhere closer to work, that would practically throw me in the boston area...

This thread makes me smile :) definitely feel good about myself now.

Thanks for all the compliments.. I tried... and there's still so many things I would "try to" do better the next time...

then again.. There will probably always be some things like that, even the next time and the time after that..

Alright! some updates:

I spent the entire last week working on the closet and the fish-tank. Figured I had about 5-10 hours worth of work left.. turned out to be a LOT more.... It's still not done either, will leave a bit early from work today to get the final touches on the water-flow going :)

First: Added Dry Sand, Live sand, Dry rock and Live rock to the tank:
(this is not the final stack! the water was too cloudy to stack properly)

Then started working on the back-room/closet.. Mounted the battery backup for the 2 vortechs, mounted the BRS reactors, mounted the Apex & PM2

still have to clean all the wiring and hosing up, I have clips and clamps but haven't gotten time for it yet...

Some issues that I ran into:

Rodi unit is WAAAAAAAAAAY too slow.. I will purchase a booster pump and upgrade to the 150GPD volume...

My concern is that the DI part/crystals have already all turned light-brown, even though it has only output maybe 120 gallons worth of water... TDS on output now reads "2" ..

I have ordered replacement filters, just in case, but I feel it should not have happened this fast, does the lack of flow contribute to this problem????

Secondly, Temperature readings... I have 2 temperature probes from Apex and 1 standard glass thermometer..
Apex Temp 1 reads: 77.5
Apex Temp 2 reads: 78.2
Glass Temp reads: 75-76

All were in the exact same spot in the tank.

I set the 400w heater to 79

I'm wicked confused at this point.. no idea what's right or what isn't....

Tempted to just buy 5 glass thermometers, drop them all in the tank, and calibrate the apex's to the result i see most often on these...

Thoughts??

The 77.5 and the 78.2 look like they are within the accuracy of the probes. Is the accuracy listed? I wouldn't worry about 1 degree. The glass thermometers are not to be trusted...I had two that were 5 degrees apart.

Nice progress BTW. I was wondering what kind of wood you used for the stand - and what are the door panels made of?

Alright.. so it's safe to say that the tank is indeed between 77 and 78 degrees?

I'll aim for both to say 78-79. . that would be fine then..

I used Oak boards for the entire stand (home depot has it). gets a little pricey, but in my opinion it beats Pine/plywood and then having to stain it.

I really wanted something that I would like naturally, so I would not have to stain it..

The door panels are the "hardwood underlayment" boards that home depot sells for 13 bucks a sheet (4x8).. it was a welcome surprise to find those :) . they are also oak-veneered.

Sincerely,
