My new Heater...

I have a WON BROS 350w Titanium Heater. I set it up yesterday into my 110+sump and when I got home from school today the tank water was at 93F!!?? My six line wrasse passed, and the rest where barely clinging onto life... Is a 350 Titanium Heater overkill? I had the temp controller set at 78F but was just heating my tank out of control..Did I set it up wrong, I put the thermo probe in the otehr section of the sump?

always use a series of smaller heaters. this way if any one heater breaks, the others will maintain the proper temp. in the even one sticks on it is too small to overheat your tank.
 
Odd.. I have that same heater, and it is rock solid.. no issues at all.

Sorry to hear about that. Are you sure your tank is producing heat from another source?
 
I think it may be my return pump...That water has been consistently at 78F withoyut a heater, I just have to pumps in there right now... I now where I messed up, It says on the set up manual not to have the temp probe to close to the heater its self, Ima give it another try later on tonight Ill set it at its lowest and see if it still overheats then Ill have to return it...but according to these heaters standards Im guessing Id be the 1st one to return one for non-working purposes..

EDIT: the outlet I had it connected to was bad, it went black POOF! The heater is now connected to a new outlet... Wish me luck..

I nearly had a similar heat problem when I moved my heater. I actually ended up pushing the Mag pump against the refugium glass, causing the pump to overheat.
 
I don't think your problem was that the probe was too close to the heater: that would make it shut down prematurely, not stay on too long.

If the water is 78 degrees and the heater is set to 78 degrees, there is no reason that a functioning heater should turn on.

That said, you could try this: once the water temp is where you want it, fiddle with the heater's dial until you are right at the point where it activates/deactivates, and see if that does the trick over a longer period. It may just be poor calibration. You may find that, to keep the water at 78 degrees, the right spot on the dial is 72 degrees.
 
you should let the heater adapt to the tank's temperature before you plug it in. Then, after that, plug it in and find out where the clicking fo rhte on/off is, and you've found out the calibration point. Mine is off by like 5 degrees, but it holds true where I put it.
 
you did nothing wrong. its your heater.

i had 5 of the won titanium heathers also. 2 of them cooked my tanks and one just stoped working. i switched all to visatherm stealth heaters.
 
i have heard too many things about those Won Bros heater.. i will never use them

maybe i better hold on to the critters and tang for a bit longer:confused:
 
No Bebo my tank is at 78F without the heater.... I re-read teh anual and it says to let the heater sit for 15 minutes to allow the heater to adapt to the current temp water.....I just plugeed right away and it started working overtime since the water at the time was at 65F???

O well I connected it again and Ill see how it goes, my Mom will be home and I told her to to keep an eye on it.....

Clearly you have a calibration issue, but a larger one than normal. If you think the tank is 78F and it thinks the tank is 65F, then of course it's going to continue to heat the tank until IT thinks the tank is 78F (or whatever you set the heater at.) In this case, 91F.

Reduce the heater dial by 13 degrees and voila! You are calibrated.

However, you may also want to investigate that "78F" figure by using a good old fashioned thermometer.

With any heater, especially a powerful one, the use of a controller is highly recommended. I don't think there's any heater out there with an accurate dial or setting built-in.
 
No no no what I mean is.......

The tank was at 65F when I first added the heater, I didnt let it adjust just threw it in and play! Then I come back from school and its 91F I have both a digi and a handheld thermo. I take the heater out and the water has been at 78F just with return pump on...

The outlet that it was connected to I thought had been fixed but my Dad just put a cover over it I guess for decoration and I thought he had done the re-wiring but I guess nto he tells me its no good still..

I have an extension conencted to a working one and hoping that was the problem...

Im out of school in 2 hours I havent gotten a call from my mom yet I told her to call me once the temp goes over 80F

Might be a calibration issue but could also be a faulty heater. I have (or had) a brand new Won 250 that was calibrated according to the directions, but when I finally put it into use it stuck in the ON position permanently. No matter where I turned the dial it stayed ON. Won Bros instructed me to return it to them for replacement after I wrote them asking if I should report their product to the Consumer Product Safety Commision. After I get it back I'm not sure I'll trust it in my tank. Might have to use it for warming my salt mix.

There are a bunch of reviews on MD about these heaters failing in the same manner. Not saying that yours will fail, but if it does you should contact Won. LMK if you need their contact information.
 
your taking a chance. its not a heater that you need to replace.

3/5 broken wow titanium heaters:

1. first killed my 6 nc. it was only a 50 wt heater. entire tank, over 600 worth of livestock cooked.

2. another 50wt heater, killed my 10 gallon fuge. melted all macro and killed entire sand bed.

3. 100 wt heater, used for water changes. never turned off.

than just decided to throw away the remaining two...

like ive said, ive gone with all visatherm stealth heaters now. auto shut off, plastic. etc.

ive also heard bad stories about them before buying, but chose to ignore all neg. threads. im sure not all won tit. heaters are bad, but i jsut did not want to take further chances. having 3/5 break down on me is enough.

unless you get a temp controller, i guess your at risk with all heaters.

I have a Won Bros 300W titanium heater. When I first got it the heater would stay on ALL the time regardless of the setting. I also purchased a Medusa Temp controller that would jump all over the place with the temp reading, about 5 degrees. I couldn't figure it out until I unplugged my PC lights and everything worked great. For some reason my two Workhorse 5 ballasts and PC lights were interfering with the way the devices read the temperature. I purchased new ARO ballasts and the problem is fixed.
Just an interesting set of circumstances.
