My new Japanese dragon eel :)

AWSOME eel !! Has it eaten yet ? Sometimes the Japanese ones are harder to get to eat, do to the way they are caught .. The ones at AA are Japanese also one of them you can still see the hook and line stuck in its throat. That's why the hawaian ones are a lot more usually do to capture methods

If he eats that's usually in the clear. Just check his throat when he opens his mouth see if you see any fishing line sticking out.

Thats concerning, Why would AA have them noted for sale as Hawaiians. Also the Hawaiians are caught by hand or with hook/line and the Japanese most of the time come from the shrimp boats and trollers.

I didn't know that that's crazy. The guy said he's had him for 3 weeks and he eats, but I've yet to get him too. He shakes his head when I try to feed him. Hopefully he's just getting used to the tank. Thnx for the info I had no idea. Kind of sad actually.

What are you trying to feed with?

Yea AA has them as Hawaiian. But I went to look at em today and they look the exact same as mine, Just much smaller. So I did some research and supposedly they are the same fish but come from diff parts of the ocean so people get confused and think they are two diff species but they are actually the same one. its just that they are found from Hawaiian waters all the way to Japan's. on a side note the guy I talked to at AA said ones eating and the others shaking his head like mine is. Hopefully I as well as he can get em to eat :)

Just let you know Aquarium Arts does not quarantine the fish so keep you eye out for diseases and putting them right in your tank your playing Russian roulette. Best bet is to OT your fish. Good luck with the fishs

Tinkers been there since December and harlequins been there for a month so not too worried but thnx for the heads up. And the eels from Cali guy said he's been in quarantine for 3 weeks.

I've tried silversides, squid, and krill so far but he just shakes his head like a dog and hides.

If you can get some whole smelt or whole shrimp, like from lee lee's, cut open the guts and feed, if you are using tongs, don't, just put it near it for a bit. it can take time, you may waste some food( don't leave long in your tank), but normally they just dont understand what your doing. I have had many eels in the past, most I raised to an unmanagble size and had to get rid of them. I have seen the shaking head thing, it appeared to me to be a defensive move( warning) my two green moreys would do that to each other when one ventured to the wrong side of the tank. I currently have a Caribbean snake eel, that took almost two weeks to eat, I was nervous as well.

Ok thnk u so much I'm gonna head there today and try that. Guy that I got him from said to try fresh squid as well instead of frozen so I'm gonna try that too. Lets hope this works thnx again means a lot to have people like u around to help

Frozen will always lose its, for lack of a better term "smell"...

Any update. Just curious, tagging along, you have such a nice looking eel. One of my favorite.

As for the smelt they have them gutted already is that what u meant or feed him the guts? And there are so many diff shrimp lol.

should be ok with out guts. make sure the shrimp is whole, head and all. it can be just a normal bait shrimp

So I bought the shrimp squid and everything and came home to find I grabbed someone else's bag an paid 20 more than I should have..... Epic fail its back to the market tomorrow. In the meantime I have some giant shrimp to try and feed him.

Holy crappolie he ate a shrimp :) gobbled it right up, just had to drop it off so he could get it, he doesn't like the prongs she just shakes his head when it's in the tongs but when I dropped it he ate it right up after he thought I was out of the room :) now the next questions how many do I give him? It was a pretty big prawn. Gonna try and see if I can get him to eat another one (2) is what I'm thinkings good for now till I hear from ya. Thnk again sooooooo much I can't thank u enough. Huge relief.

Well done. I am glad it is working out for you. Don't know, on the number of shrimp, their all different. I would say no more than two every three days to start, she may want one a day or one a week, don't know, but as you know over time you will get to know her better as well as her signs. Side note, after she get used to you and a feeding schedule, make sure you start to change up the food type.

Congrats again on a very beautiful and sought after eel, and kudos to RM for getting you such a nice specimen.
