What is the dragon eel eating now? I have one that has not eaten. Tried silversides, prawn, clams (frozen and fresh), scallops =). Whats next shrimp, squid, and smelt? He does the shake head thing too, think he is just confused.
so i went to lee lees and got him to eat fresh shrimp (they sell it in the back of the store, and he loves baby squid (again fresh) after i got him to eat fresh i only feed him from lee lees but i do freeze them now and defrost as needed. and i was told that they do the shake of the head as a defense mechanism. i know he still does it sometimes after ive given him 2 and he doesnt want anymore. if hes shaking his head after all these things hes proly still settling in and just not in the mood to eat. after doing my research (i freaked out when wasnt eating) i learned that they can go months without eating and b perfectly fine. good luck u can also try using garlic extract with it to attract him to it. mine eats it with or without garlic. i feed him every 2-3 days. sorry so much info but wanted you to know as much as you could so you dont freak out like i did lol.
dont know if i mentioned but baby squids his favorite.
ill update a pic of him too you have any pics of him? would love to see him. my girl calls ours smiley (for obvious reasons) lol always looks like hes smiling
Impressive eel. Really like the color. The more info the better I can never read too much detail. Going to try some baby squid and shrimp next week. What type of shrimp is it?
Eel finally ate however it was my green bird wrasse. I was gone for 48 hours and when I came home I had 10% of my wrasse left. He was about 6 inches long. Tried to feed the eel some fresh shrimp but he is not eating. Still doing the head thing. Any suggestions???
Your tang will be next. Those guys are fish eaters. They don't eat shrimp or squid naturally. Try sardines at other small fish. Our LFS has one they feed it koi that don't make the grade from their breeding program. The thing kills 8 inch koi is a split second.
I got him on some goldfish, He was literally next to it, but he did not eat it. He went over to it, did the head shake and that was it. Maybe he needs bigger fish. The eel is about 2 feet long.
I would not use goldfish for long, freshwater fish is not good for them. They only eat once a week twice at the most. Probably still full from the wrasse
I'm sorry to hear that mine is as tame as they get. Actually being picked on by my new queen angel right now so he hides a lot now. But still eats every 2-3 days. I use the cheaper shrimp at lee lees(i think they are white shrimp?) like 629 a pound. It's in the back on the left side. (The guys get em for u and weigh em) that's also where the baby squid is. He also eats the smelt too. Just took him a week or two to get used to em. Again I sometimes use the garlic extract in the thawing water. Don't know if that makes him want it more or he doesn't care. But I do it for preventative disease care regardless. (Sorry took so long to write back was on vacation for bowling tournament)
Don't know if I mentioned b4 but they can go months without eating from what I read. One article had a guy who had him eating for over 2 years then he would randomly quit eating for a month or two (head shaking) other thing I did that I think helped was not chasing him with the food to make him eat. First time I got him to eat I put the shrimp near him and left the room. I swear he waited till he thought I left thE room and devoured it shortly after. I think that he didn't trust me or the grabber I was using till after a few times of being out of the room. Now he goes crazy and goes to the top of the tank chasing all the other fish outta the way (only bumping them tho)He knows not to eat them it seems. He actually seems to have bonded with my harlequin tusk. They sleep together. Hope something helps in this lemme know :/
As to slapshots comment u never know, every fish has a diff personality so he could potentially eat ur other fish. Generally they shouldnt tho if they are bigger than their mouth (doesnt sound the case for u or ur wrasse tho, sorry)Ex my other queen angel was perfect for my tank (sadly died) but never picked on the eel. This ones a bully and nips the eel every time he shows his face now. Hopefully changes soon tho. Ud think the eel wouldn't take it, but he's a scary cat. I'd just make sure to try and feed him every day or two this way when he is hungry he doesn't go after ur other fish, initially until u get him finally eating. Def try to put the squid (or shrimp) next to his cave and see if he will take it where he can't see u or a grabber.
I had one of these for awhile. A guy brought it to me after it decimated all his expensive fish in his reef tank. It didn't eat for almost a month. I got him to eat using a clear acrylic spear and raw frozen shrimp from any super market. Thing was, until he got used to the stick he would not eat unless I literally pushed the shrimp in his mouth. After about 2 weeks of this (feed every other day) he identified the stick as feeding time and now goes for almost anything on the stick. But prefers shrimp.
Hi Everyone,
Just trying to get him to eat the goldfish to get him eating. Feeders are a treat for my fish, usually every month or so they can chase them around. I think my best option is to use some shrimp and put it on a clear spear and leave the room. He could still be full, my wrasse was pretty big but I had a feeling that would be the fish he would go after because of its shape.
I wouldn't leave it on the spear the first few times he may be scared of it. But never hurts to try I guess. Mine was afraid of the lil grabber till he realized it wasn't a threat anymore.
Got some baby squid today and some smelt. He got closer then before to the smelt and my snowflake munched the squid before my dragon could get to it. I am just going to try and feed him everyday until he eats. I just left in the tank and my other fish are taking pops at it but none of them could ever swallow it. If it disappears either my dragon ate or my snowfake got hungry.
