My new Mag

Got it last weekend. Got it from a reefer who had it for about a year. Seems to be doing ok. I would have liked the color of the base to be darker but maybe that will change. So far the clowns have shown no interest.

Its mouth is a little inflated. Not gaping though. Has anyone ever seen that before? Still acclimating? Its not doing the inflating and deflating cycle that i know i should be worried about. Never had a Mag. so im not 100% sure on its health.

I know its not as nice and "jaw dropping" as some of the Mags in this forum but im sure someone has some input for me...?

what kind of lighting did the previous owner have it under? looks a little translucent. i imagine you have LEDs over this tank? which type are you running?

i think it looks like a healthy magnifica, and like blackgate said, they all look great that way.

Looks a little bleached, but otherwise healthy. I wouldn't be overly concerned about the mouth, likely just acclimating. Keep the water quality up, as in undetectable nitrates, and you will probably be fine. You mentioned your ocellaris haven't gone in the mag yet, is that still the case? Usually I've observed ocellaris swim directly to a mag, even when they're captive bred and hadn't been around an anemone before.

He said he had it under MH and LED. I have it under LEDs, it's a rapid LED kit. I plan on keeping it there if it does ok till after I move next month. Afterwhich it will be going in my main reef which has MH system. Right now my reef is established and I don't want the mag walking all over my SPS and other corals.

Yes, they have still refused to go into the mag as of yet. Hopefully soon.

Thanks for the update. Odd behavior for an ocellaris not to go to a mag. I hope they take to it soon, too.

my tank bred clowns never went into my mag. think I waited over 2 weeks then decided to help them by gently netting them and placing them onto the mag. after a few times they just loved it and have stayed there ever since.

I'm not really sure if hosting causes the tentacles to extend longer. I would wonder if the nutrition you've been providing might account for the extension of the tentacles. Anemones tend to have shorter tentacles when they are starving. Glad the ocellaris found the mag, surprised it took them several days, but these creatures are full of surprises ; )

Hmm, ok. Well i have been giving it about half a cube of mysis daily and it seems to be enjoying it. Im thinking about moving it to my 80 gal reef which has 250 watt MH lights as opposed to the LEDs.

It would look great anywhere, I'm sure. That's a beautiful tank you're thinking about putting it in. I would keep an eye on it when switching from one type of light to another, to see if it shrivels as the day goes on. It may (or may not) need some time to acclimate to a different light.

Just put the mag in the highest possible spot in that tank and it shouldn't move.

Not sure if it is just the photo quality but the mag looks better in the latest pic.

Same camera phone, same lights. It seemed to me as well like the colors darkened a bit on it, esp on the base. Ill try to get an updated pic up soon. Its eating very well though i might add. Ive been feeding it a tweezer full of PE mysis, and yesterday a started giving it krill. I think it took down about 5-6 krill last night in the span of a couple hours. I fed it 1-2, let it eat, then another 1-2 an hour later, and then again, till the lights went off. Its gotten VERY sticky now as well. I still feel it would do better in my 80 gal under the 250 watt halides. im still contemplating that but i feel bad because the clowns just hosted it. I do have a pair of pink skunks in the main tank though and those guys will host in anything.
