The LFS just got some peacocks in today......3 to be exact. I had a 6 gallon ready for him. Will probably up grade to a 12 as he grows. I shot this pic in the bag before I put him in the tank....... not sure if it is a male or female:)

You're so lucky!

I don't even have a car to GO browsing arount my LFS let alone buy and transport a 10-20 gallon tank and equipment. No one I have called or visited online has or sells stomatopods, with the rare, rare exception of O. scyllarus. I emailed some guy who supposedly bought 30 G. Smithii from somewhere a while ago but haven't heard back.

Trying to get my hands on one of these things is so frusterating! I'm jealous of you! :P

So you have 2 now??? Cool. I have one little guy in a 40!

Dr. Roy just informed me that the mantis in my LFS is a female Gonodactylus chiragra, and it is for sale. e-mail me for store info, i don't want to spam, but the store is in so cal.

I just had to have the peacock when I saw it. I had a little 6 set up and waiting for the LFS to get it in. He gets them from his freshwater fish supplier in Florida. Yes, that makes 2 for me now.....I have my 58 gallon reef that I just put 1 harlequins in, a 10 that houses a watchman pistol pair, and my 2 mini-mantis tanks. That's all hubby will put up with (for now!)

more mantiss in ia.

more mantiss in ia.

i guess that i didn't think that there was anybody else even close to me , in ia, that was into mantis(fish1). i work at a LFS and was lucky enough to get my mantiss on some carribean LR. i haven't identified him yet but he is a smasher- scarlet in coloration with green/blue hammers. we have access to quite a few different mantiss but i don't think that we will be stocking them anytime soon.

My daughter and her friend both have them too:) You're right though, the LFS here only special orders them. He likes to move them out the day they come in. He has 1 left right now. I am going to try to feed mine something today. Hope he likes freeze-dried krill. My other smaller one does:) If not, I keep trying until I find something he does like. There is a little blue damsel in the tank with him......I've seen him watching it......hmmmmmm?

Janey,

I was just there today. So you were one of the ones that bought a peacock! I saw the third and it is gorgeous! It molted right in front of me and the colors were spectacular. I should join the Iowa mantis club too. I have a green smasher from Florida. Mine eats silversides but he/she has been molting and I finallly saw his head poking out today. That peacok was beautiful.

The club is not just for mantis owners but for all who love anything to do with reef keeping. Janna Mozdzer is the one to contact about getting on the email list for coming events. She is opening a new store on the 16th of this month called The Reef Connection. It is located in Altoona, Iowa......just do a search for "any Iowa reefers" in the reef section of Reef Central.
Those three peacocks that Adam got in were beautiful! So colorful......God's paintbrush just can't be beat!

If the organizer of the mantis club is going to be opening a store, perhaps it will sell mantises. :)

I hope it does and that they do mail orders. :D

Do you have a tank ready for one Shadow? If you do why don't you call Flying Fish Express and see if they couldn't mail you one? There has to be someone out there in Ca. that sells them. Let your fingers do the walking through the yellow pages:) Good luck in finding one!

No I don't, thats one of my projects to get done. It seems I find all of these wonderful things to do... right when i enroll in 20 units worth of core classes for winter quarter. :)

But I keep telling myself... someday!

I'm certainly going to call around and I have already contacted some people, but there's no real point checking now if the supply isn't consistent and I won't be able to get the little bugger for a few months at least. Thanks for the good luck though. :)
