My new Mappa

I picked up a small 2-3" Mappa Puffer. I have him in QT by himself.

He was $39.99. I got him from a small shop. I double checked on the price. The owner said 2-3" Mappa $39.99. I thought that they were pricier also.
 
Wow! thats unheard of in my neck of the woods also usually over $200 mostly any size. good luck with him post pics when his in your DT please!

I will do that. I need to get him to eat more. He has nibbled at table shrimp and some squid.

That's good. Keep on feeding him marine-based food, and try to stay away from krills.

Try feeding him some clams on the shell. Puffers usually cannot resist hard-shelled foods.
 
He is cool. I always liked the look of them. What are their personalities like? Don't they get huge?
 
he listed 120g FOWLR. will probably have to upgrade to a 350g in a couple of years though as mappas get GINORMOUS!!! I thought my guineafowl/golden puffers are big... mappas get even bigger.
 
I am starting the upgrade to a 210 now and then we will go from there. So far he has eaten some bits of table shrimp, eat a few pods, and some mysis shrimp. He has not eaten much yet, but he does go out and swim around a good bit.

+1. 210g is arguably the minimum size for a guineafowl puffer. Mappa gets to 2 feet long and I would look into at least an 8-foot, 300g. you'll save a lot of money in the long run by doing the right tank size the first time, instead of getting a 210g and then having to upgrade to a >300g two years after that.
 
I am aware of the size and growth rate. I am going to a 210 now. When I need to go larger, it will be in a different area in my house. I will probably be going 300 gal stock tank. As he is currently 2-3" long at the moment, I have some time. Thanks for the concern though.

cakeman- ive had a mappa for a year. They really dont grow legnth wise too quick. But they grow considerably in girth. He was three inch when i got him and hes close to 5 now. But he went from a golfball to over a baseball. They honestly dont need too much room when theyre little. Its all about water quaality. Its much easier to keep high water quality in bigger tanks. Im guessin they live til like 30 years old cuz ive seen some huge ones. All the other owners ive talked to say the same thing about growth rates. U must keep high water quality or you will stunt their growth. For most people that means as big a skimmer as you can afford, as big a refugium as you can get, use of GAC and water changes. Forget wetdry filters. The high nitrates they produce are not healthy for these fish or any in my opinion. They love high oxygen levels so a big refugium with algae is great.
