nice clam, i would try to get him to attach to a rock or similar then gradually move him up. maximas like / need just as much light as croceas.

what kind of rock should i try to get him on? flat, put him between rocks?

He will pretty much attach to any rock. Just make sure it is large enough to hold him upright so he does not tip over when he gets larger.
