My New Scolymia Tank

Hello all,

I just moved my Scolymias to their own tank (less current, less light).
They seem happier with the new home.

Wow you have no idea how jealous I am of you right now!

Are those any particular kind of scolymia ? the ones i have seen locally don't seem to hold the same shape so i am wondering if they are just young babies or if there are different kinds.

Also i'd like to ask where you find such amazingly beautiful specimens! feel free to send a pm with info if you dont want to share here..

Absolutely stunning. one of my most favorite LPS

What are the tank specs? I'm planning a 40br, lps dominated system. So I'm intersested in your lighting, circulation, filtration, etc.

Thank you guys.

chrisstie, these are regular Scolis. I bought them from LFSs.
It's hard to find a good color though, and it's expensive too :(
You can find it online store such as Reef Science, Atlantic Aquarium.

msn711, this tank share the same 90g sum with the 300g SPS tank.
Light: 175w 20K XM with Blue Line ballast
Circulation: two maxijet 500.
Return pump: maxijet 1200,

How deep is your tank? I just can't get over how wonderful it looks, so great!

That's a really cool idea to have it share a sump with the other tank so you have good water going in there with the benefit of LR from the other tank.. too cool!

chrisstie,
The tank is 22"x22"x17" tall

cartoonbear,
Because this tank shares the 90g sum with the 300g SPS tank, its setup is very simple:
Tank: 22x22x17tall acrylic
Light: 0ne 175w 20K XM with Blue Line ballast
Circulation: 2 maxijet 500
Return pump: maxijet 1200

My husband just bought me a scolymia 2 weeks ago and it's loving it's new home. When fully deflated-rough diameter is roughly 4 inches. When fully inflated-easily 8 inches. I aslo keep it in the sand, on its side-roughly 45degree angle.

2 questions: How big can they grow-how fast(in your experience? And it appears that the calcific bases of your scolymias are buried in the sand. Did not do mine bec was concerned (and don't know any better-we're newbies) We have 5-6" DSB-should I bury its base?

bluepointreef,

I think 8" is very big. Mine are around 6". I've been having them for more than 2 years. I feed them shrimp twice a week.
I don't bury their bases into the sand. I cut 2" pipes and bury them into the sand. Then I dig the sand inthe pipes out. Finally, I rest the bases on the pipes.
I saw lot of reefers bury the bases of the scolis into the sand and they are doing fine.

So do Scolys require less light than most SPS?

I have a 30in tall 70g with two ultra Scoly's (1 red and blue, 1 "rainbow") Recently the rainbow hasn't been extending the way it used to. (It is about 6mo in the tank)
Trying to figure out why... the red/blue one seems to be fine though and they are both near the bottom. Froggys near teh top are doing fine, SPS growing, Zoas growing at top middle and bottom, shrooms on bottom are not melting from too much light.

Current lighting is:
250w XM 10k
150w Actinic PC
150w Aquablue PC

Amonia and NO2 = 0
NO3 = 5-7ppm
PH 8.3
Alk - on target (not sure of the number, but reads fine on my test)
Temp - 79 (night) Chiller comes on at 82.

(tagging)

high current or light might be a likely cause for failure to expand? I have one in my biocube that has never really expanded. It is maybe 2" across and sometimes 2.5, but never bigger. I do have high flow in this tank, but lighting is only 72w of PC with 70 watt of halide....

deepsea2005,

Thanks for your comments. Here's a pix of mine today. (Tried to cut and paste from import file to a word document-but did not go). How did you get the pix onto the forum "quick reply"

jefathome,
When my scolis were on the bottom of the 300g SPS tank, they did not expand much and looked unhappy. I thought because of too much light and current (4x400w, and 35x turn over).
Since I moved them to this tank, they look much happier.
Sometime, my scolis shrink in for a few days then expand even bigger after that.
My elegance and Rose anemone do the same.
By the way, your scoli (avatar) looks beautiful.

Gosaints,
I feed them twice a week.
