My New Tank Stand.....YIKES!!!!

I have a new AGA 125 gallon with a new AGA tank stand.

Now this tank is going to tip the scales at around 1300 pounds by the time I have it all loaded up with rock and water. My floor can handle it but the closer I look at this new AGA stand the more worries I have. I mean there is not one 2x4 in there. I have to believe that AGA would "overbuild" these stands because if this thing let go it could kill someone.

Can someone ease my concern here? This stand IS safe...right? Anyone else have this AGA 125 tank stand? Not flimsy but I can't believe it is not all 2x4's in there. Not even one!

if you do feel very uncomfortable about it you can always add xtra bracing to it yourself with 2x4's to ease your worry but i have never heard of anyone's stands breaking if they were made for the size tank it is intended for

Ahhh there engineered to handle it. I know a guy w/a 220 looks like its held up w/toothpicks. Youll be alright, just makesure its nice and level and not leaning at all.

I have an Oceanic stand holding up my 180. Again, no 2x4s. But, the stand is very cleverly designed so the edges of the tank sit on the long pieces of plywood that run the whole height of the stand. No problems.

Be VERY precise when placing the tank on the stand, though. Line the stand up with the glass, not the trim on the glass. It's a tight fit. I have a "show" tank and stand, so there are decorative pieces of trim on the stand and the tank. Don't use those for positioning purposes.

Thanks,

I am not up for building one myself so maybe I will just beef up the new one I have. After reeading these threads though...I feel good about the way it is.

you can always add some corner supports if you're not comfortable with it. The 110 I had was the same way and it was fine.

these stands are specifically designed to support the weight of the tank and anything that may be in it. Plywood by design is actually stronger than a 2x4 because it is constructed so that the grain of one layer is opposite the next. in conjunction with the adhesive used to keep the layers together, its stronger than one might think. The stands are not just built with one layer of plywood, but in strategic structural locations have multiple layers. In all likelihood you could probably put the weight of a tank twice that size on that stand and not have any problems. All glass built your tank and built a stand that can support it. If they didn't think it would work they wouldn't sell it for fear of many many lawsuits

I don't like AGA's stands they look so flemsy and the tank is only supported by the edges :o I have used them before with a 37 gal tall with no problems, but still scary. My 46 gal was an oceanic and boy was that stand strong, plus it had a solid top on the stand and a solid bottom , if you understand what i'm talking about lol I love the oceanic stand, that sucker weighed almost as much as the tank and leveled the tank really nicely.

not having 2x4s is not a big deal. a 3 ft 2x4 on end will hold over 400 lbs by itself. you also have to consider the weight of the tank is spread out over the entire stand, not one side or corner supports the whole tank. then add the fact that the stand is tied in together with supports. you have nothing to worry about. the stand will hold your tank and then some.
