My Ocellaris breeding thread

Batch 6, for the sake of documentation. I took a snapshot of some of the fry in the main display tank swimming. I used macro, so only 1 is in focus. The parents can be seen "sleeping" near their nest in the background. I am still amazed that just 31 days ago, my Batch #3 clowns looked like these.

I'm always jealous of occy breeders. Your little guys have 3 stripes like the day after meta. I'm waiting months just for a body stripe! Haha

Great work!

Aww:( I know how difficult this is especially since you have had great success.... You better get that 55 going soon!

Batch 3 33 DPH. Today I put a bigger power filter in order to use some carbon media and ammonia media in addition to the matrix stuff that has been seeding for the last week or so. Left the sponge filter there as well. Maybe this will clear up the water and control the Ammonia. This will buy me some time to collect more water from the main tank to at least provide 2/3 of the water for the 55 grow out.

Batch 4 23 DPH. Yes, these are the "little" guys. I doubled the water volume and it is now on par with the other fry tank. I also moved the filter that was in the other tank over and used new matrix media and a carbon media, kind of squeezed them in there. I also started using Seachem Stability to build up bacteria count. So this is the first clear photo from the sides of the tank. I was shocked myself at how they look when magnified with a macro shot. Can't believe the tail stripe is showing up. But they are on par with the development of the 3rd Batch. Keep thinking of these as the "little" guys. No mortalities today!!! YEAH!!!

In this mornings routine, found 3 dead fry in Batch 4. I guess yesterdays "improvements" did not take well with them. I'm beginning to think this batch is not quite as hardy as the first batch. I'm doing pretty much the same things overall. The only thing I can attribute is the lack of rotifers past 5 DPH. On Batch 3 I kept the rotifers and greening the water until Meta at around 9 DPH. There might be something about their development in the days just before meta and eating the gut loaded rotifers all the time. I did not enrich the brine shrimp because the BBS would have grown too large in the period of enrichment. So this goes on my notes for future speculation. Next batch will have rots until meta. I looked really close at last nights tank shot of Batch 3 and notice no misbars and no flared gills, so environmental issues may not explain the recent mortalities (I know it's only 5, but I get attached to all of them). I should have probably dripped the water instead of dumping it in all at once. Note to self, treat Batch 4 with more care.

Other than my 3 deaths this morning, nothing new to report. I decided to post a picture side by side of both tanks viewed from the top to get a good idea of the size differential of two batches 10 days apart at this stage of their lives. 34 day olds on the left.

Found a misbar! I know it's not exactly something to brag about, but you always want that one "odd" clownfish that is different so you can give him a name! I am going to call him iFish in memory of tomorrow's iPhone 5 launch. (plus the misbar looks like an "i") The other guy towards the left top is not a misbar, it's some food floating on the surface.

Batch 3 35 DPH. Some of the bigger ones are starting to develop the black around the anal fin and the tail fin. They all swim in a school now, it's kind of cool, when they bunch up together, they look like one big orange ball moving about. They don't do it all the time, but when they do, it's interesting. I've read somewhere that this is not seen in the wild, but only in tank raised environment. Next time it happens I'm going to try and catch a video of it.

Batch 4 25 DPH. The tail stripe is coming along quite nicely. Some are already getting their orange tint on their tail fin. Their development the last 7 days have been incredible. It also happened with the previous batch, but I am still in awe watching it happen. I caught iFish in my daily video journal. The "i" pattern is nearly identical on both sides, kind of cool! I'm going to have to try and see if I can get some good stills of iFish. He is kind of hard to find being that little amongst 100 siblings.

Batch 3, 36 DPH. Got some good shots today. I can see some black developing in the anal and tail fin of some of the more advanced guys. They were just begging for food.

Here's something interesting, this guy is getting a white ring around his tail. Not sure I've ever seen that before. I don't see anymore with this trait. Something to keep me eye on.

Batch 4, 26 DPH. Coming along nicely. Having a hard time getting shots of iFish when I can see him. They are still too little to track with my camera.

Great Job. That's a lot of fish. Have you considered what you were going to do with them when you no longer have the capacity to keep them?

They are nice looking clowns.

Some LFS have shown interest. I obviously cannot keep nearly 200 clowns. I will cross that bridge when I get there. Maybe my wife will fall in love with all of them and let me get a 400 gallon aquarium, fill it up with some nems and put all clowns in it!! (highly unlikely). A person can dream...

Batch 7 spawning as I type this. They are a day late, but the female was pretty big this morning, so I was expecting something to happen soon. Yesterday was their water change day, so that might have spooked them.

Batch 3, the filters have finally cycled and the water is clearing up fast. The sponge filter will be moved tomorrow to batch 4 barring any unforseen issues.

This week I will start accumulating water from the broodstock tank in order to start filling up the 55G grow out tank. I will probably get a divider to split it into two so I can move in Batch 4 sometime next week when they reach 30 DPH.

Spawn 7 Completed!!! Another big one. I might raise this one.

Congrats again! I found your update interesting on them spawning later in the day than normal... ClownFishSushi said his clowns spawned later than normal too.

Anyway... Good luck..
