My Ocellaris breeding thread

Here's a 1 minute video of the clowns in grow out. Clown behavior is clearly established. They are hosting the PVC elbows. If I remove them, they ball up together in a school. With the PVC elbows all over, they spread out.

Well my male for some reason or another decided to take a leap of faith last night and I found him dried up on the floor this morning :(:(:(. I used to have the hole he jumped out of covered with a little box, but I removed it about 2 weeks ago to do some maintenance and I forgot to put it back :headwally: :headwally: :headwally:. I feel so #%#@#$%@! this morning I can't see straight. It will be interesting to see if the female will tend the nest of eggs until they hatch. So no more batches for the foreseeable future. So looking ahead now, I'm thinking of getting a darwin or a designer clown to pair my female up.

 I'm so sorry to hear about your loss! :sad1:

I wish you the best with your future clown fish.....

Please keep us updated with on your current batches. I enjoy reading your success.

My wife is egging me to go get the male now. I told her I wanted a snowflake so she gave me the go ahead :love1: so I will be looking around for a young male. The female is tending the nest, too bad I won't be able to save their last batch as I just don't have enough rotifers for them. I didn't get my cyclops eeze today, maybe tomorrow. I dropped some golden pearls in batch 8 today and a lot of them went to town, even eating off the surface. I couldn't believe it. There are a few now out of meta, but most are either entering or going through it now.

Sorry to hear that!I know how ya feel. I had a pair of picassos I have been wanting to breed but the male jumped out of an egg crate covered tank! So now I only have the female.
I hope you find a new male soon and I hope your female accepts it. Good luck!

Grow out all spread out now 44 and 54 DPH.

Sorry about the jumper :( That really sucks. But, on the other hand, you have an awesome wife to give you the go ahead for a snowflake!! I LOVE my snowflakes :)

In all fairness, she pretty much let's me buy anything as long as it doesn't take up space in the house. So I could buy a $400 clown and she wouldn't complain. I just spent over $500 in rocks!!! Where else do you spend money like this on what is basically "dirt." The hard part is getting her to agree to a breeder tank after she just let me do the grow out one. But I can't complain either way, she is awesome. The biggest obstacle to getting designer clowns has been myself, I don't see the "value" of a $100 clownfish even if it is really rare, but like a good capitalist, If I can invest $100 on a good snowflake and he pairs with my female, then all of a sudden my hobby is now self-sustaining, which is huge considering how much these little guys eat! More budget, better quality foods for them. This hobby has really helped me out with stress. Sometimes I sit in front of my growout tank to observe their antics and before I know it, 30 minutes have passed by. It is truly fascinating watching these little guys develop. I tell people that if they have the time, the patience, the economic resources and the interest, there's no reason they can't raise clownfish themselves. It is an investment that pays off not necessarily economically (unless you are breeding platinums, black ices, etc), but rewarding in countless other ways. I recentely prepared a flash drive with different developmental stages of the clowns and my son's teacher showed it to her students, they were fascinated. I am going to go speak to them about it sometime before the end of the school year.

I just got my Cyclops eeze, will be making up a solution in liquid to feed the youngs ones tonight. Will compare pigmentation with previous batch to see if there is any improvement.

They are freeze dried, so I'm just going to re-hydrate it and feed it as a liquid in suspension. I'm told that is one of the better ways to feed small larvae, because they sort of look like baby brine since they are bright red. I might eventually mix it with selcon or something like Vitachem to add other things. But I want to see the long term effect of just cyclops eeze.

Batch 7, 10DPH about 1/2 are out of meta. Second stripe now visible quite a few. I didn't get around to preparing the cyclops eeze solution because I found a potential issue in my grow out. See below.

I put in a new T5HO system on my growout and with the increased light, I was able to watch my clowns more closely and I noticed that some have a mucus-like growth on their bodies and fins. They have not been exposed to anything but broodstock water and new RO/DI salt mix. The clump of chaeto came from my reef tank, but I doubt it was that. I don't think it's ich (doesn't look like it). About the only thing I can attribute this is stress due to declining water quality? My ammonia badge shows good. I asked my wife who has been feeding them since grow-out and she told me she is feeding every 2 hours, which is fine, until she told me she pinches twice from each bag, which is small and medium golden pearls. I had been noticing an increased "left over" mess lately. So I did a 30% water change, cleaned out their tank and installed a UV sterlizer. Hopefully this will reduce the bacteria count. My skimmer is skiming some foul smelling stuff. I will closely monitor this situation as I do not yet want to use anti-biotics to treat the tank. About 15% show some signs of this anomaly. You can see what I'm talking about easier on the fish's reflection on the floor. The fish have good appetite and are behaving normally from what I can tell. What a week!

It looks too big to be ich. Ich is usally small little dots everywhere, this is more like mucous secretions. But I will give stress coat a go, can't hurt anything.

Grow out looks much better today. Water is crystal clear. A UV sterilizer does wonders for excess bacteria in a densely populated environment. From one day to the next, the water cleared up and looks like reef water now as opposed to the slight cloudy look that it has had for the last few days. The clowns also seem to be much better. I am hardpressed to tell which ones had it before as it now pretty faint. Looking really close you can still see some remnants, but nowhere near as bad as yesterday.

Here's a good shot at clown just out of meta. Notice the full fin development and taller body.

Wow, Excelent documentation on your venture! I'm sorry to hear about your male, but a nice snowflake would be a great addition. I personaly now have two pairs, well one pair is a black ice and a black phantom :) and I love the bold white patterns. I can't wait till mine are old enough to start breeding, but that's a couple years away.
If your check local clubs or some tank setup/maintenance businesses you may be able to find a more mature male... Or an adult pair.
