My Ocellaris breeding thread

Bad news today. Lost a LOT of batch 8. Batch 7 kind of picked on them, so now I only have around 20 or 30 left. I don't expect they will make it. Live and learn...

Only 3 of batch 8 made it. Now going through meta. Lost 1 from Batch 7. I still can't figure out these losses after meta. Especially the ones that came out of it looking good. The two that didn't look right just didn't develop correctly, but the 3 or so I've lost looked good.

Here are my 55 and 65 Day olds in their grow out. Doing really well and eating me out of the house.

Here's one of the three remaining from Batch 8 (9 DPH) amongst the 21 day olds. He is now going through Meta.

The 21 Day olds got their sponge filter today. I moved the one from growout and put a new one in grow out to seed it. The sump now does most of the bio filtration now.

Lost 1 of the last 3 from Batch 8 during meta. The other 2 made it through meta. They are so much smaller than Batch 7 at this point.

You are doing such a great job with your babies! I love all your pictures and you have gone into such detail with you documentation.

I know how hard it is to loose a baby fish when we put such hard work into trying to duplicate mother nature.

How is the new fish doing? Do they look like they might pair up?

I have not yet purchased my snowflake. Once I do get him, he is going into quarantine for at least 3 weeks before he goes into DT. Although I'm thinking of putting them together in some sort of breeding tank, like a 29 Gallon Nano. I just don't know where I'm going to put it.

Today everything is going as expected. No losses and everyone is just a bit bigger. I have to say, the guys in grow out are eating machines. I'm going to move them to C1 to see how that works out.

Batch 7 is way past the stage at which the other batches had constant fighting. I am wondering if the addition of the PVC's had something to do with it because these guys just don't seem to bicker a whole lot. They in fact just swim all over the place and typically only school whenever I'm cleaning the tank. The other two batches use to clump up all the time. Here are a couple of photos from last night. The development is on par with what I have observed previously.

Saw a beautiful pair (not mated, just two of them) of snowflakes today at an LFS, but they wanted $250 for both. I thought it was a bit steep. They have had them for 3 weeks. They were about 2 inches in length. They had them labeled as Picasos, but they were clearly snowflakes ocellaris. I didn't pull the trigger today as I want to look around other stores to see if I find a better deal, otherwise I will go back and try to beat him down to $200 for the pair. I mean he has had them for 3 weeks, I can turn his inventory over in a few seconds. :)

Good luck beating him down Ernie. It would be cool to see a couple of of those mixed in to your breeding experience. Could you offer him a couple of your babies in addition to cash?

I was going to offer in trade, but I think my little guys are still too little. they are just about an inch. I don't really want to let them go until they reach at least 1.5 inches to give them a better chance.

Good luck with talking them down. The price of clowns has gotten a little pricey, don't you think? They are making a KILLING off us. I just picked up a beautiful pair of blacker ice for $85. each. Another LFS down the street was selling them for $250 :eek1:
definitely shop around, you will find a better deal somewhere.

You are a good clown fish "Dad". You are right give them the best chance possible by letting them get bigger. I think if I ever get as many as you I will be in trouble cause I will have a tough time letting any of them go.

Went out of town for the weekend. Came back and they look bigger. My wife even commented on it.

Here are my 73 & 63 Day olds in grow out. Can't believe they are past their 2 months.

Here are my 29 Day olds with the 2 surviving 16 day olds. Interestingly I have not seen any kind of major bickering at all.

65 & 75 Day olds after lights out, so everybody is cramped in whatever spots they can fit in.

Great pics. The second pic, 65&75 day, are very cute. Like a game of musical chairs, fishie style!

For a sense of scale, how big are the PVC els? 3/4 in or 1 in?
