My Onyx clowns from Rod's Reef

I ordered a pair of Onyx Clowns from Rod on Monday, UPS dropped them off at my door 9:48am Tuesday.

All is well so far, they ate some Rod's food this evening from the sample pack I got at MACNA, here are some pics

Thank you. I would probably say no to the breeding. I'm just going to enjoy them.

I think they develop their black color later as they mature. I guess that's why they are cheaper when they are little since they may never be black. I think they get about 95% black ones and the others never turn black.

Those Aussie Blacks are looking like a better buy @ Salty if they still have any

They get about 80% black and 3 bars of white. True some don't develop all their black, but I'll be happy either way.

the good thing about Rod's clowns is that they have awesome genetic makeup compared to other "mass" produced clowns, they have a more vibrant orange, they eat very very well, they are known to host coral or anemones very easily, and they are very healthy and you dont have to worry about clownfish disease with them

i cant wait to get mine

Actually mattyice what makes rod's special is that when you breed two onyx clowns from his they can pass along the onyx trait at a high 95% The hosting, color and disease is all hit or miss. Not sure where you get your info on that.
Color comes from what food they eat.
hosting in anemones is not a for sure thing
And disease? A 5 degree temp change can cause a fish to get sick, theres to many ways for fish to get sick to say they are very healthy and you don't have to worry. If I wanted a all black clown and wasn't concerned with breeding them I'd get those all black asuies from DAN imo. You know they'll be black and you can see you disease and watch them eat. IMO

Not sure, but You can see your purchase up front, make sure there black, no disease and eating. If you want to breed onyx clowns go for it, but if you just want a nice looking black clown get one site scene imo

I would like to setup a tank visit night for it, not sure how many people would come out since i live about 5-10 minutes from the football hall of fame

Kreeger1 Percs take longer to develop color, as im sure you know.

not to start a fight but the Black clowns at salty have some white spots on the fins...

wow, he is awsome and they develop black slowly but it should fill in really nicely.

Not saying there not nice looking by any means. Being a superior product is what I debated I wanted a black clown, saw rods and liked them, saw dans and liked them a little more but ended up getting the above pictured one. something a little different from the norm. I still might get a black one from dan and see how they do together.
