My osmolator will pump when turned back on

I've found that when I unplug my Tunze osmolator it starts up and then will start pumping water, even if the optical sensor is submerged. If I lift the float switch it will beep and turn off but then return to on once I let go of the float. I've been able to fix it by taking the optical sensor out of the water and then putting it back in the water will make it return to normal function. What could be happening?

On start up the pump always runs for 15 seconds, this is a built in function to prime the pump and so on install you can verify it works, if it is only running 15 to 20 seconds, this is normal.

Normal operation. The same would happen to me when I did wc's. At first I would move the tube from the sump to the ATO container to pump the water back into it instead of the sump fearing it would mess up the salinity. One day I forgot to move it back and almost ran the return section dry. Now I just leave it, it takes a lot more than what is pumped for those few seconds to change the salinity anyway.

You can turn the pump speed down in the controller as well, that will reduce how much is added.

Well now I feel like a dope. I was wondering why when my wife would run feed mode on my apex that it wouldn't have activated the high water alarm if it was indeed coming on and staying on. This makes much more sense. And this amount of time will not cause problems for me, just didn't realize this was happening! Thanks! Thought I had a dud optical sensor.

No problem, no need to feel like a dope. This is a feature we discuss all the time at meetings because it causes confusion, we added it many years ago to solve another issue which was a pump with loose connection or air locked that did not fill and the logic was that on a new install 15 seconds was just enough time to fill the hose and get it running and verify it worked, but they never anticipated switching it off for feeding or otherwise as our systems usually just shut off the flow pumps and not the sump return.
