My Picasso Onyx Clownfish will not host my Rose Bubble Tip Anemone

Hello all,

I purchased a pair of Picasso Onyx Clownfish 4 Days ago and have a Rose Bubble Tip Anemone they will not Host. Does anyone know how long it usually takes for a clownfish to host an anemone? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

It could take a day it could take a year. A bubble tip is not a natural host so they may never live in it. But I think the odds are with you if you wait it out. Mine took almost a year but now they are happily playing in the nem everyday, totally worth it :)

gigs and mags are their natural host, both require a bit more research tho so you can provide for them properly, they are more difficult to keep than a bubbletip, also finding a good healthy one is a must. start with the research, google and reef central are filled with information on everything you need to know

please do not force them into the anemone, it can hurt or kill the clownfish

Yes, true, and H. crispa is another natural host that is easier to keep as long as you have the room for one, and strong light, but agree, they will probably accept your BTA at some point.

Hello all,

Thank you all for the helpful advice. I'm going to give my BTA a shot and see if with some time my clowns will host the BTA.

just wait, it takes patience and hopefully sooner than later. In all my 4 clownfish pairs (ocelleris and perculas), all went into a rbta... it sucks to wait but thats the best you can do or try scaring them in to the nem.

imo scaring is probably the worse method coz it really freaked nemos out. they would jump or turn sick

Sorry to bring up an older thread, but I figured I'd summarize some of the points I've found:

1 - NEVER force a clownfish into a 'nem. If the clownfish's protective coating doesn't have time to equilibrate to the nem's poison, it may die. Clownfish become immune to the poison by slowly exposing themselves to it, if you force a new fish into a nem, it may overwhelm it, and the fish will die.
2 - BTA & Picassos may work. Be patient.
3 - One thing that may (or may not) work, but I'm certainly going to try if I settle on an RBTA & Picassos: Print out a big picture of clownfish in a 'nem, and see if that "shows" them!
4 - Be patient? (I'm repeating this for myself, mainly :-P )
