My Purple Tang, and my thoughts on care and tank size...

I was just thinking how small my purple tang is compared to my kole tang. My kole is bigger than my purple, and I'm fairly sure the purp is much older (since she lived in the fish store so long) maybe that's just the way purple tangs are?

this is my first purple... but i have kept blue tangs, yellows, scopas, chocoalate or mimic tangs, vlamingii, and convicts... if fed well and kept right as far as flow and oxygen, they all seem to grow pretty fast cept the zebrasomas as in yellow, purple and scopas, as i never thought they grew quick... but again, dont let this be misleading, they need room and LOTS of food imo...

odelay! lol... well its not funny... i had a 4" harlequin tusk the first couple weeks i had my purple in the display, and within a week, he was bullying the tusk, and those fish are no push overs... purple are very very very aggresive... no doubt about it... they get comfy very fast, and will not tolerate ANY newcomers after that... jus imo, but well known as a "fact"...

again, i think the zebrasoma genus genuinly grow slower... but require jus as much food and space...
 
Yeah the purple is one of the oldest tangs that i have currently in my setup. However, he is one of the smallest at 5-6 inches. He is very feisty but also a coward when other tangs push challenge him. He likes to push my copperband around though.

Very pretty color. Nice deep purple. A nice gem to any setup.
 
i'm considering at PT, but i'm afraid it and my powder brown might battle it out. the 4" powder brown is the sole tang in the tank right now.

i dont know too much about the browns, but i know powder blues are said to be a bit mroe aggresive than the browns... you have a really nice large footprint (tank area) and if you have a good amount of rock, you should be fine... even move the rock a bit to change up and disrupt any "territory" the brown may have established right before (like moments) you add the purple, and imo, you should be jus fine... but you should be fine without moving anything either, also imo...

and here is when i first added him, my tank actually had rock in the display but i completely changed my look and approach, and i also had the tusk at that time as well... but he found a nice big home :) should have kept him though lol, now I am kicking myself... but even after a week, the purple started to bully him some, and tusk's are no push overs...

his fins where a bit beat as well when i first got him, but as of now, which i have no pics of, they are 100% healed and beautiful... sorry again for the horrid pics
 
they should be. That's where they originated. There are now some introduced populations around Florida.
 
seems like prices on the PT varies a ton. my LFS guy has them for $110!! while LA is $150+ and bluezoo $250

so PT's handle cupramine pretty well?

that is very intreresting, i did not know that... not saying its a good thing, but interesting... at some point lionfish, which are not native to the florida waters, or anywhere near there, where introduced, and now overpopulating certain areas, and destroying other smaller fish and invert species populations cuz they have no real predators to the lionfish, as there are any really anyway... hence their posion spines...
 
From prior experience, I thought purple tangs were fairly docile. I have a massive (grew from about 2 - 5 " in 2 years) mean purple tang. I only feed once or twice a week and it's doesnt' slow that bully down.
