my reefing history

been crazy about reef tanks for a decade now; started with a 1-footer with all the wrong advises and through books, forums, advises and experience ended up with the colour candy sticks called sps.

hardly post here (or hardly none-a-contribution at all) but for a decade of reefing, i wanna share pics of my journey....

year 2004 ( 4 x 2.5 x 2 ft tank)

year 2006 (3 x 2.5 x 2 ft tank)

year 2008 (4 x 2 x 1.75 ft tank)

year 2010 (4 x 2 x 2.25 ft tank) still an existing tank in office but due to job travels my colleagues have turned this into an lps tank (don't understand why women love corals in motion)

end 2011 (3 x 2.75 x 2 ft tank) my current reef tank and hopefully the last

I agree. 2004 was awesome but not a lot of open water. 2011 was a good compromise. What were the major factors that helped you keep all of those SPS corals?

thanks man. you may consider me "old school reefer"; til now i still believe halides is the most suitable for sps, sump is just an added water volume where i can throw my carbon, phosphate and skimmer and nothing else -- fluidized reactors didn't came into my mind and i believe the more things you put in your sump, the more complicated it gets and the more screw ups you will have, leaving you spending more time at the sump rather than in front of the tank. lastly -- keeping my hands as much as possible off the tank adds up to the stability and colouration of my sps.

but still, i am learning....

updates on my addiction.... started a new tank January 2013, a 225g shallow reef tank (6ft x 3ft x 20")

all comments and feedbacks highly appreciated.

Love to see all the corals grow out over the course of one or two years. It's beatifull already, but this tank needs some big grown out collonies.

Now this is gorgeous!!! Love the shallow, the rockwork, the choice of fish! Just right

thanks all for the kind comments.... now it's gonna be the waiting game, would love to see these frags and mini colonies mature to big colonies and create a reef forest :)

Funny I like the 2006 tank and newest. Coral colors looked the best to me. Plus I always like the blue look of reef tanks. Your latest tank look awesome. Can't wait to see it all grown in.

I love the 2006 tank - I don't think that you can beat the URI Super Actinic look.

The new one is awesome too. I love the fish selection.

In the new tank, have you ever considered a wavebox? It can really help to keep the sand in place, unless that is what you are going for...

thanks for comments, I love the 2006 as well but not the size of the tank.

I never considered installing a wavebox and the sand shifts created is an eye sore, exposing the glass bottom. I "planted" some skin star polyps though and hopefully cover the exposed areas.

Wow...now that's what I call progress! I love your diligence. Being in this hobby for over 20 years, you see a lot of changes in equipment and technique and even more so reefers getting in and out of the hobby. This hobby isn't easy with the dedication in time, labor, and money needed and not to mention how quickly things can go seriously wrong if we neglect regular husbandry. I admire how you've stuck through the times, judging from your pics, you've had good and okay years. Love for the hobby and the want to learn and expand our knowledge is what drives us old time reefers. Keep going brah!

thanks mate! 20 years..... i guess it runs in our blood -- i decided to quit the hobby a couple of times yet again came back with better plans than the previous set up, I agree that this hobby is a never ending learning process, expanding our knowledge more through the years...
