My Rhinopeas only build -Help me add to it

I bought 2 red Rhinopeas and planned on putting them in a fowlr tank with a large lionfish. It didn't work out as planned, because they were too hard to feed with an aggressive lionfish stealing all their food.

So I decided to get a custom tank just for them. The tank is a rimless 23x23x17 from miracles. The stand I made myself out of 3/4 maple plywood.

The tank is right across from my desk at work so it's nice being able to look at it all day. The only thing I don't like is that there's not much movement. The fish just sit there and stare at me all day.

Any fish ideas? I know they can eat anything as big as them so it's kind of tough...
Maybe a lot of inverts?

Cool set up. I don't know much about these fish, but they look big in the 23x23. I think you're best served as it is.

They don't really swim around so the tank's a little boring. They mostly just sit on the bottom. It'd be nice to have something moving along the top of the tank.

Well, that is what ambush predators do, they sit and wait for the next meal. Have you considered that maybe these are not the right fish given your interest in movement? Any fish put in with them will likely be consumed.

IMO. Your setup is rather incorrect. I have great success keeping Rhinopias. I would have a longer than higher display. Obviosly you have space contraints. The best you can do is add some macros as thats where they would hang to ambush. Also if you want them to retain their red color I would get some red macros. Also don't feed them to often. T

Myerst2- Do you mean macro algae?
How often do you feed yours? I've been feeding 1 silverside each every 2 days lately

Yes I do mean macro algaes. As far as the silversides throw them in the garbage. All they are useless fatty foods. Basically your feeding them a Big mac every other day. Silversides have no positive nutritional value. If you are just doing a Rhino sp. tank I would feed gut loaded live foods. You live in Queens so in a couple of months you can go down to your local bay and catch grass shrimp and minnows. I would put them in a bucket with an air stone and feed them crushed NLS(New Live Spectrum Pellets) for a couple of days. I would then feed the fish twice a week to cessation twice a week. If you go frozen, I would do prawn, strips of filets, or shellfish. But seriously the silversides are as bad as feeding goldfish. Hope this helps. T

Oh I forgot to mention. I sold my year and half old Rhino to Manhattan Reefs member Domboski. He is super knowledgeable about keeping these guys. Check him out. Great super knowledgeable guy. T
My old guy... Hopefully Domboski still has him...

Think both are awesome; would not care they move little and stare at me all day.

Good advice from Tim. By the way these are rhinopias eschmeyeri which are rare to very uncommon.

Thanks!
Don't get me wrong I love the fish and they're a big hit at my office. Everyone that comes by is really intrigued by them.

myerst2-Thanks for the advice I'll switch up they're diet. I actually do a lot of fishing in Jamaica bay and was thinking of catching and keeping alive some live food for them in the spring.

One thing I do to gut load everything I feed them is inject the silversides with a mix of Ro water and Selicon. I use a small bottle with a syringe tip on it used for gluing acrylic. You can get them at sign supply stores. I stick the tip into the fishes mouth and inject the liquid into the fish:

I special ordered them from Michael at Nyaquatic.com. I also got a really nice frogfish from him about a year ago.

besides just using selcon, also consider a vitamin supplement like tropic marin immunovit. good stuff
But i will also echo was what said earlier, if you can feed live foods like small damsels, ghost shrimp and other saltwater feeders you'll find the fish tend to do better. Many public aquaria keep Rhinopias w/ little long-term success. They consider these fish short lived (2-3yrs). Of course it could be from the high stress of having lots of folks staring at you, but in general their water quality i better and they feed a wide varieties of foods. All aquariums wean the rhinopias onto frozen prepared foods, so maybe suggest a mixture of both frozen foods and also damsels w/ supplementation
