Just Reefin'
While researching Giganteas since I got into the hobby I kept seeing Selcon pop up. Everyone would soak the food in Selcon before feeding the Gigs because of the benefits of the amino acids, vitamins, etc, etc... Never really thought much of it... now that I finally have a Gig I figured it would be a natural buy since everyone else has had great success with it. So after using Selcon for about 3 weeks now here's my experience...
Selcon on Gigantea - Whether or not it's a coincidence that since using Selcon daily on the food the Gig gets, the Zoox is coming back in a lot of places, and overall health is looking awesome! This Gig was severely bleached and is making a terrific recovery. Like I said, I can't tie it directly to the Selcon, but I do feel it makes the food more nutritious... Apparently my Gig thinks so as well.
Selcon with Fish - So this is where I can visually see the biggest benefit of it so far. Our little hippo tang had ich for a while, was just stressed and garlic, etc did nothing to stop or help it. The fish get a selcon soaked frozen feeding a day at night (I'm still perfecting how to do this as effectively as possible). I soak Rod's, Mysis, and whatever other frozen in Selcon for 15 minutes or so before feeding...
Within a few days, the hippo had a complete transformation. Once again, coincidence? Who knows but health has improved!
My wrasses is really awesome to see because their coloring has just gotten so vivid it's like night and day. Our Lubbock's always had a cool color pallet but was dull, not flashy, shiny, none of that. Since the Selcon it looks like a flat paintjob to high gloss. Colors in his fins (accent colors, look AWESOME!). Our Exquisite Fairy Wrasse has gotten blue'ish \ purple \ black streaks in his fins, and our Whip Fin looks great as well...
Our two newest wrasse additions (pair of yellow wrasses), same thing. Vivid colors and look 100x than at the LFS.
So if anyone is on the fence, or thinking about it, my experience has been very positive. The only pain in the butt is because of the oil the skimmer will lose foam for about 1-3 hrs (depending on how much liquid I can get out of the food) but then comes right back. I've seen no algae effects or downsides to using it as well.
Anyone else have any experiences with using it?
