I bought my panasonic whisper fan online, I choose a model that moves about 110 cfm, but there are larger fans. I'm no HVAC expert, but I would avoid using your a/c air as the sole source of ventilation air. I would suggest have a fresh air access vented into the hood or fishroom, and another that has the whisper fan blowing the humid air out.

My tank is in the basement, I vent straight outside through the floor sill. I have passive air from the room that replaces the exhausted air.

I have two water heaters right next to my sump, so, from what HVAC I have learned (from RC :D )... in my situation I need to avoid negative pressure in the basement. So, if I exhaust basement air, it must be "fed" fresh air. If not, I could pull CO back into the house from the water heaters.

Of course, it would then just get blown outside. but.. I guess the carbon monoxide floating by would best stay out of my lungs.

The fun part about this hobby is that no matter who you are, it will take you into unfamiliar territory!

That's why it's so much fun!

mdaybowls...

OK. This is really the ugly underbelly of my work. Here you go.

Going from the basement up. You can see I had to "chew" through the floor to make a rectangular hole for the pipes. I marked this out and did the perimeter with a long drill in "dotted line". I am sure there is a better way. I tried to use a hole saw, but, the floor was so thich it broke three of them.

From the top side, you can see that I came up in the space between the walls. You are looking at cut dry wall (green) with the back side of the drywall to the next room in the background.

Simple!

Well, I have made some progress. Since I last posted I have wired the hood above the tank with two 20 amp circuits, I have installed two aquacontrollers which are currently sharing the complex task of running one heater. The tank is full of water at temperature. I have replumbed the skimmer for the third time and I am breaking it in. and ready to fire up the calcium reactor soon. The ventillation system is going and the humidity in the basement is o.k. at this point. The ATO is running and I am getting close to launching this baby!

Here are some random pics including some from my all night session in the basement last night.

I am experimenting with some eggrate, live rock, and foam structures to cover the parts of my back wall which I don't want to scrape. I have painted them with krylon fusion to match my blue back ground. This way, I don't have to wait for the coralline to grow. The structures are also designed to hold Tunzes and hide them from view. I am using small pieces of marco rock, which is dry at this point.

Thanks for looking!

great updates, i like the last picture. exactly how many attempt did you take of yourself before getting it right :D? how much foam and live rocks to ratio will be used, also what will hold it in place once done?

Ha ha. 32.

The foam is so bouyant you I basically have to scrape almost all of it that you can see, using only enough to help stabilize the structure. Probably by volume using 5% foam by the time it stops floating the rock structure. That stuff is nasty to get off your hands by the way. So far, after one round of scraping foam, my rock structure still floated. So I really whacked out the foam and I think it will sink now. I also decided to paint the eggcrate, because using the foam to cover it causes way to much floatation. Part of the challenge is that marco rock is very light. Some old fasioned florida chunks might help hold the thing under water.

The structures are free standing and having PVC legs and egg crate feet. All of this will be buried in the sandbed and hopefully strong enough to hold position with the tunzes loaded in the top.

There will be three of the "massive" rock structures flush to the back wall in places, and two or three towers to go in the forground.

After finishing with the foam and zip ties to hold the rock to the eggcrate... I used epoxy to cover the foam (protecting it from UV degredation) and sprinkled on aragonite to cover it.

The square blue holes will hold the tunzes. You are seeing the side views and bottom, which will be hidden when viewing from the front. Since the rock structures are hollow, I am hoping the pumps will pull water from the open areas right below, thus, circulating water through the live rock. Also, the rock "floats" off the substrate to hopefully avoid detritus build up.

These two pieces sit flush against the back wall of the tank to hide the center overflow, tunzes, the back right corner. I did some testing to see which parts will be hardest to keep the coralline off, and, I am covering these areas with rock structures. It is my taste that I prefer a clean blue background to create an illusion of infinity. These rocks will also be shaded with blue around the periphery to add a "3D" look and make them appear less flat then they really are. Then, I will create pillars and arches for the forground.

Tomorrow, I will shop vac off the extra aragonite and do some touch up work.

I threw a piece of uncured rock in my sump, and my skimmer started producing skimmate within 30 minutes. LOTS of it.

I have a feeling the system is really going to get a good test when I put the rock in to cure. Hopefully, by this weekend. Then, I will only have light installation to tackle!

At this point, it looks like I will get by with about 200 lbs. of live rock and other 50 pounds of "TUFA" to use as random base rock. All of this is dry and I will need to decide if I want to risk seeding with any "wet" live rock. I suppose I could put this in my sump. That might keep certain pests (predatory shrimp etc...) out of the display.

looks good ..I need to finish my overflows. Sometimes I have to resin a couple times to get my sand to stick. Yours looks like the sand stuck pretty good.

awesome work. I cant wait to see the rock structures once theyre placed in the tank. I'll be attempting something similiar with the eggcrate and foam soon. I'm going to be doing it a bit more like tiggsy tho, using it to cover the overflows and then just using regular LR piles out in the middle of the tank.

We'll see Eric. Most of what you see is loose and will come off. It may take a few coats to get it enough to stick. It's hard to stay patient!

Thanks Ryan!

Tiggsy was my inspiration. I should have ordered the black, thicker egg crate - like tiggsy used, this HD stuff is cr$p... but I am making it work.

My foreground structures are going to be pvc and rock. No foam or eggcrate... too much hassel!
