I bought the shark 2 days ago, yesterday i noticed his belly starting getting a rash of some sort. Then just now i noticed it sometimes 'rolls' around and around. he can swim but iam very worried. What is going on?
im a newbie for salt water aquariums and the only reason i have a salt water tank is because sharks are my favorite animal.. I really dont want it to die...

his rolling around looks like this >> :lolspin: except not smiling... -_-

I have a few questions for you
What kind of shark?
How old?
Tank size?
Parameters?
any pics?
Also sharks are not easy things to keep I would highly recommend against a noob keeping one

Sharks are very tough to keep and are prone to infection. Their skin is easily scratched and they really need very fine sand for bottom dwelling species. With a few exceptions there are very few fish tank appropriate species and all of them are for advanced aquarists with huge tanks.

It was a bamboo shark about 8-10 inches long and I just got the available live sand (it seem pretty fine grain to me) and that's what the sales associate recommended. I have. 55 gallon tank with heater , thermometer, aqua filter, and air pump. The salanity 1.022 temp 78-80. Unfortunately overall, my little sharky died the day after I made this topic.. :( was sooo sad when I saw it laying and gills not moving at all.. :l

I am not going to be getting anymore sharks or any salt water fish , until I do more research and planning ahead. Thank you anyways everyone for the help.

Also I THINK the rash irritation was because of the sea salt mix settling on top of the live sand. I had 55 lbs of sand (dad told me I would need 150lbs for my 55 gal but too much money to spend in one time for me). I am guessing when the shark layer on the sand the sea salt burn it stomach??

a 55 gallon is no where big enough. Realize the sales associate is there for a reason. Not to help you, but to make sales. Good to hear you're going to be doing more planning. I'd recommend keeping the 55 gallon and do a community reef, or FOWLR.

I am sure I speak for most here and ask why you didnt research before buying??????

You should have more than enough resources here on this site to do homework before buying a fish and putting it into your environment that is not sufficient enough for good husbandry and life sustainability.

I am sorry to hear about the death of the shark, but it seems it could have been prevented.

I don't think this comment is necessary. I'm sure at one time all of us thought the LFS or pet store people knew everything about fish and were telling us the the complete truth. He seems young and trusted the LFS. They learned from the bad experience. Forgive and Forget

Many of us may have made the mistake of impulse buying but if you have the resources of the internet, which obviously he does, then it seems that a little more research may have prevented this from happening. Not to flame anyone but if you have the drive to ask questions on this site or others after the impulse purchase is made, then why not before the fish is bought? Let's not always put the blame on the LFS, anyone looking to get into salt tanks should do their own research along with asking questions at the LFS. This way they can determine who at the LFS is knowledgable and what stores to avoid.

The person had 3 posts here. Not everyone knows about places like this before they get a tank.

Indeed, another story of LFS's giving people bum gouge to sell stuff.

If the Op is still around there is a ton of information on this website and on google in general in keeping animals. I put some information out there for you in hopes it helps.

Saltwater should be mixed prior to it being added to your tank, I do not know if the tank was fully cycled but you should also make sure your Nitrate/Ammonia/Nitrite are all 0 before adding fish to your tank. Cat sharks grow normally to 24" plus and should be kept in a 125g tank minimum. Dimensions are more important than size. They require ample hiding spots and are nocturnal animals.

I feel bad for you because the LFS gave you bad information, just keep with the hobby and ask questions here.

Did you guys read the bit about salt laying on top of the sand? I do t think this post is real. Someone is trying to wind us up.

I agree, even reading that first post, I was thinking, I this kid for real? Most do not start a thread in their first month of signing onto the board. Also, they have usually posted elsewhere before starting a topic. The rolling thing was funny I have to admit.

For your next try, I would consider either a giant sea squid or a killer whale.

It can be tricky to keep the killer whale, as you will have to keep a stockpile of live seals in order to feed them.
