awesome video! I love all the colors and the definition you got on the polyps as they started feeding.

Thanks for sharing your work with us Ben!

Thanks for all the compliments! I've spent a lot of time on this stuff and having fellow reefers enjoy it is quite rewarding.

I love all the colors and the definition you got on the polyps as they started feeding.

I blow on them with my turkey baster until they close and time lapse them as they open back up...it kind of depends on the coral and the mood of the coral, but it usually only takes them 10 minutes or so to open back up. I think they have some semblance of awareness/intelligence because the first time you blow on them, they take a while to open, but after that they are like "I'm not falling for that again dude." and open up quite fast.

That's really smart. Did you have your camera hooked up to anything to take those pictures over a specific period of time? That's a lot of clicking if you had to do it by hand.

nah I didn't click (82k pictures!). I have an standard intervalometer for my camera that I used for shots where the camera/light doesn't move, but what I mostly used was much more complex.

If you look at my other videos on vimeo you may get somewhat of an idea...I built an intervalometer circuit (about 2 bucks worth of electronics) that hooks into an arduino USB board. The same board controls the stepper motor driver for both my linear stage (which the camera sits on) and a stepper motor for my rotary table. The rotary table can have anything mounted on it, but I mostly used it for the sun you see in the background (with a mirror behind the coral pointing out the side of the tank) as well as overhead lights. This let's me control exactly when the shutter get's triggered and when the motors go, so I can ensure the camera/light never moves when the shutter is open.

Very creative. I hope your movie gets tons of attention.

Having it featured in the June's issue of Reefkeeping magazine would grant it the tons of attention that it deserves;)

You could build one of these instead. You'd have to submerge the entire camera to get it wet.

Yes, it's big. Yes, it's bulky. Yes, it's ugly. But I can get some pretty nice shots with it. Link

Tremont, that video is incredible!

Everything mounted to my tripod/stage in a professional manner (ie. with tape and glue):

That contraption looks like it could be some kind of Nuclear device on 24. :)

Heck no, that was one of a kind. I don't know if I would even give it away. It truly is a beast, but was fun to make.

That was cool you need to talk to animal planet. Great concept hope you can run with it. I would love to see the full film if you ever release it.

First of all, I want to apologize to Tremont for what feels like a thread invasion. This is all about his video, which is incredible. I'm going to watch it again, right now.

My post was only to answer another post about taking pictures without soaking a camera. And no, as I stated before, it is not for sale.

it's ok just send me one of those top down boxes you have for sale from Melev's top down box emporium ;)

Actually, I would like to try doing top down time lapses with a box like that, possibly for doing longer term growth shots on corals that I can't just move over to the glass (I think it will be easier to show off growth with established colonies instead of small fragments).
