My skimmer sucks....

I have one of the Berlin HO Skimmers rated for like 250 gallons or whatever, hooked up to a RIO 2100. For some reason, I just dont seem to pull out skimmate. I should pull out plenty, as I have 2 big tangs, a tomatoe clown, and there werer 6 damsels at one point (managed to catch all but one and throw em in the fuge)... yet in like 3 months, I wouldnt even get half of the collection cup full! ive played with the venturi valve and adjusted the air... no dice. So I give up. I need a new skimmer. Anyone have one they reccommend? The Remoras seem to have a good rep. My tank is 125, so I dont need a monster of a skimmer. Better yet, anyone have a skimmer they are selling? If anyone wants the Berlin (maybe you can get it to work for you), lmk.

ASM G3...........it'll work perfectly on your 125...............Just like a EuroReef but about 30% cheaper
 
maybe play with the intake and it's distance from the surface of the water... both of my coralife super skimmers (i have a 65 on my 37g and a 220 on my 90g) pull all kinds of nasty dark green skimmate. depending on how dark i want that gunk, you can set the skimmer to fill the cup in two to four days. remember, this is with the "low end" coralife. reason i say to play with the intake is that i never could get much of anything using their directions... but reading here, i found that their recomendation was too deep and bringing the intake closer to the surface worked much better.

i am sure there are MUCH better skimmers, but for the price, you can't beat those coralife units!
 
abendx, thanks for the info. I have played around with the Berlin... and no dice. I "inherited" it from a friend, and it has never worked well. I am tired of fooling around with it! I must say, though, I never thought to adjust the distance of the pump from the surface. That is interesting. This info may have come too late, though. I may be through with that unit!

Nope, but I've had both...................the ASM will run circles around the CSS

ASMskimmer.com sells the Mini G for $99..............but that's too small for your 125.................

IMO any CSS skimmer is too small for your 125.................even though the CSS 125 says it's rated for 125 gallons, I wouldn't run it on anything over 75 gallons

You can find a G3 used here for around $150...............new they're about $300

But IMO, I wouldn't go cheap on your skimmer...........it is the life blood of your system......

Thanks Steve. Thats good advice. I will look into the ASM skimmers. I have heard that the Coralife skimmers are really cost-effective, but not so great as far as performance goes. So would you reccommend the ASM model over the Remora Pro or anyother model?

Yes, never had a Remora but from what I've read they either work great or don't work at all...............lot's of fine tuning I've been told.

The ASM's are pretty much plug & play........if you do get one, get the gate valve kit also, makes them even easier to use

www.asmskimmer.com .................$242.99 for the G3 & $37.99 for the gate valve kit...................if you order both at the same time, I believe they will install the gate vavle kit for you, but don't quote me on that

You remind me when I just first got into the hobby and that's exact skimmer I got too, I even tried Rio 2500 but it still didn't do anything. Lol, sometime you try to save money but ended up paying more for it .

Thats actually reassuring... you guys all have nice tanks! I am starting to learn that you cant be a cheap a** in this hobby... just costs you more in the end. I am gonna scrape up the $$$ and get a nice skimmer...
 
What about an octopus skimmer? www.octopusskimmer.com I just picked up a NW-150, Ill let you know how it compare to my CS100 euro-reef, when I get it up and running in my new tank. but for 124.00, I couldnt pass it up. Do a search on it, they seem to be popular.

p.s. on their website, you have to click on the skimmer model on the left. If you click on the picture, it sends you to the wrong skimmer.
 
Abendx, thanks for the advice! When I got home I tried one more thing... I moved the Berliln into the sump rather than hanging on. It has been pulling deep green skimmate for the past couple hours! Go figure! I think I will keep this skimmer for a while, and save up and get one of the really nice ones as soon as I can. This is great... now rather than shorting myself and getting a cheaper skimmer out of necessity now, I can wait a while and get a great one! (Assuming this one doesnt quit doing the job again!)

:lol: soooooooo u mean... the Red Sea isnt that bad? it seems to be doing its job... its collecting like it should, but i dont know if it is good enough for my tank... :(
 
I WASTED my money on a Fission Nano Skimmer................the best job it ever did was crack into a million pieces when I ran it over w/ my truck!!!

I hooked a air pump to the redsea hob skimmer i have, it works...ok. the jebo one I had was better, but no prize either.
