My SPS tank is a mess, please help

I'm going thru the exact same issue but on a 500g.
I had a cucumber die/disappear and I added a sand sifting gobie. both bad mistakes and now my 2 year tank is a mess. I've changes 400g's of water [ro/di] and I'm still stuck with the goby! very very hard to catch.
I believe the dino's do affect SPS and zoo's and even my anenome.
theres something released from the IMO. It'll take awhile till they burn themselves off if you keep the tank running good.
not much else you can do. almost like recycling your tank.

beavis- you have a small tank. I would break it down and scrub the rock to get rid of the bubble algae. I would also remove the sand and go BB (BB is just the method I like best- there are tons of nice tanks with sand). Don't pack the rock really tight- stack it loosely with plenty of open space. Start fresh and pay attention to the details.

Get your RO/DI straightened out. 5-10 TDS is too high.

Good luck.

There are many threads about dinos here. I had it in my display tank and tried water changes and it just got worse. The dinos are feeding off the light so what I did was blacked the tank out for 24hrs. Over the next few days I only turned the MH's on for about an hour or two to keep my SPS alive. My tank is packed with SPS and other than a slight shift in color during this time they were fine. My dinos were completely gone after this treatment and have not returned.

I had dinos when I started my tank. Just like all the plague algaes that tend to inhabit a new tank, I let them grow to critical mass and then maually removed them all. That was nearly 2 years ago and nothing since.

I think if your RO/DI is pushing out 10 tds, filters need to be changed. Most likely the DI. However, I have to disagree, a TDS of 10 is not bad at all. It could be better but 10 is a very low number. I've never had dinos so I don't know what you need to do but it looks to be a PITA.

I had Dino's during the 1st year my tank was established. It grew on everything. I just kept up on my maintenance schedule ( 5 gallon water changes weekly on a 75 ) and did not add any new life. I syphoned out as much as I could during water changes. It took a couple of months but eventually the dino's dissappeared and have never returned over the last 4 years in my tank. I do not know if it was anything I did or of the Dino's were self limiting on their own and receded and cleared up on its own.

I would just continue with a strict maintenance schedule.

I have to agree that an TDS reading of 10 is quite high. Mine is 1 after initial reading of over 500 for my tap water here in florida( very hard water). I have a slight hair algae/ bubble algae problem but my turbo snails seem to take care of most of them. Check that the RODI membrane is still functional - you may need to replace them. Your calcium seems very high as well- may want to dilute it with fresh seawater to bring it down closer to 400.

TDS of 10 isnt that bad, I was running mine on tap with 40tds and my sps looked a heck of a lot better than this.

I can tell looking at the tank that you dont have anywhere near enough flow. You need orders of magnitude higher, especially with that rock structure. Stuff is settling all over your tank, and that needs to stop.

RichConley,

Is there something better than Penguin powerheads that you would suggest to move more water, or should I just add a few more powerheads?

To get rid of the dinos, the lighting period is going to have to go way down. May have to go without light for at least a couple days.

Try to maintain you Ph at 8.5 and preform as many water changes as possible.

I'm still looking for my personal notes on Dino's, I had written them to help some people combat them.

Try to get as much flow in as many places as possible without a sand storm. If you can get it to at least 50x that would be good. Algae like yours (or bacteria/dyno.) don't grow as well with higher flow. Point some PH at the rocks, behind the rocks, at eachother (turbulence) and various other ways. The best way would be to do some sort of CL manifold, but that would requier drilling the tank or doing it it this way:
http://www.melevsreef.com/closedloop.html (hope you don't mind if I post this link)
I would recommend trying something like that latter, perhaps with a manifold instead of the SCWD.

Is your Alk ----meq or DKH------what does your test kit say it is. If it is at 3.5 DKH, you need to seriously address you ALK.

How many days can I go without the lights on before my SPS frags are damaged?

How rapidly can I raise the pH?

Day number one of the battle with the Dinos has begun. All lights are off and the tank is covered from room light. The following three suggestions are underway:

1. Darkness for up to 3 days.
2. Cool the tank... doing via no lights and continued fan.
3. Raise pH... doing via increased Kalkwasser.

I'll report back as the days / weeks / months go by.

Good luck, the only thing that worked for me was time and getting the tank nutrients extremely low...

Hearing of an algae bloom and loss of color on your SPS,my first thought is light and or spectrum shift. How old are your bulbs?
